As a previous owner of 2 M14s, I just spent 2 days with folks 1v1 with my Hoosai.

This may have been in a past Yak discussion I missed, but with M14P prices so high and stock dwindling (red alert article), is there no future, or any new/possible developments for a chinese supplier of higher bang Hoosai's priced to take the market by storm Wink

Sounds crazy, Chinese coming in with an as good/better product at lower cost, but thought I would ask...this one's not going to last forever, and I know DVT is well on their way to giving these motors a power-lift...

Hmm, seems if the reason were about to pay $4.00 a gallon for 87 octane and $6.50 for avgas is because the Chinese nation is massively expanding their industrial base, urbanizing and drinking all the oil they can buy, hey, the least they could do was send us American "Nanchang" pilots (and yaks too) a competitive source of beefed up engines at fair prices so we can show off their handywork here in the states

come on - show some love Premier Wen Jiabao! (somebody, Doug, please fax this to his office, thanks)

Also, any update on the success of the metal 3 blade (performance results/controllability) - I hear it was down in AZ??

Drew:
The Deer Valley Modified M14 "Rat" motors are exceeding 450hp* with all the mods.

* This claim is based on empirical dyno data and also comparative observation by independent third party pilots (with substantial experience) in "Advanced Close Maneuvering".

I have about 40 hours on my "Rat" motor and the results are shocking.
It ain't cheap, but it is a much more efficient motor.

Didn't see any metal 3 blades at the last Phoenix event however.

Actually rats are very finicky eaters. Any time they taste a food for the first time, they eat only a very tiny part. If they do not get sick, they will eat more of it next time. If they do get sick, they will find a source of clay and eat it to naturalize any poisons from the bad food. And they will never eat that same food again.

By "rat motor" I believe they mean like "radical" with all the mods they've made out there. Who knows, DVT guys do strange stuff. Smile

Auto engines with newer designs of gear reduction systems are still being perfected and are light years ahead in some aspects. It would change the profile view of the CJ profoundly, BUT just might increase its performance as dramatically.

Just something to think about or would we be committing sacrilege at the alter of the radial engine? Me? I am a whore. I will fly anything. The engine in an airplane is a means to an end. Flight. Yes, I love all the rest of it and hope it last forever. But in the end it is still flight.

Auto conversions won't save you money. There's a nice reliable setup for a
Seabee and you can likely look at it at Sun n Fun next month, but the setup
goes for about $60K. The Seabees actually park fairly close to the Warbird area.

I don't normally disagree with you Richard, and in fact I am not now!
You're absolutely correct, there is only one way to measure power and to
even begin to state an actual horsepower number. However, being
Americans we have been making that mistake for years and years with
questions like: "Gee, how much more horsepower do you think I'll get
with that nice set of headers, or intake manifold, or prepped heads,
etc., etc". The use of the term "Rat Motor" is an emphasis on that
basis of measurement which is anything but accurate, but does indeed
point to Americans desire and ability to "soup up" engines made by
anyone for anything and to be very very successful in the process.

That said, when you raise the compression on a motor from say 7:1 to
8:1, use gapless rings that reduce blow-by, clean up the ports on the
heads, etc., you simply ARE going to end up with an increase in
horsepower. Actual dynamometer tests have shown this in every case on
most every engine in the world including radials. The question is: "By
how much".
