Louie and dave - appreciate the pics and comments. The only reinforcing I've seen to date was Gary's and another fellow who both had plates welded to the backside of their gear leg channel. After mulling that over for a bit, I had decided to weld mine flat to the leg inside the channel for a bit more strength. Now I like this boxed style even better on a number of counts, including aesthetics. Kinda embarrassed to admit I hadn't thought of it, thanks for jump-starting my brain. -Doug

The leg fix looks good though.

Doug and Dave
I took apart the right main and looked close at how it is constructed. They were originally the c channel with the lightening holes like the ones that failed in the pictures. the guy that I bought them from said that he had beefed up the mains, but it didn't mean much to me then, so I just let it go. Now I see that he welded a SS plate to the web of the channel, making it twice as thick, and welded a SS plate to the legs of the channel to turn it into a box shape. This is different than I had said before, so I just wanted to correct myself. I am adding a pic to better explain it.

Louie, good stuff.
Just remember, you don't want the cable to be supporting the weight but the over centre stop. If the cable does the 3/16's bols will break, bend and/ or the SS tubing will fail.
I have fixed several of these on this model floats and made new parts for them outta 4130

Is there a reason the welds are not continuous?

Louie - That makes sense, as I later realized positioning my size plate and 'box' welding to the channel legs wouldn't allow it to extend up the gear far enough to pass and reinforce the thinnest web area near the largest lightening hole. So now I'm back to putting them flat on the backside I guess. Maybe I'll make up some new, longer plates and box it too, feels a little like overkill though. Anyhow, the size reinforcing plates I have were included in the box 'o parts received with my floats. After seeing several now, I wonder if they weren't provided to existing owners as a SB by Aerocet or Stoddard-Hamilton after a few failures were reported?
Also, while I'm thinking about it, keel strips were never installed on my floats. Looks like 1/2" stainless bolted at each end, but how is it secured lengthwise? Glued or thru hull screwed into the bulkheads, or ??? Assembly info I have doesn't show, thx.

OK, here is my next question.
I disconnected the cables that operate the nose gear. Both sides will lock in both the up and down positions, and the doors seem to operate correctly, BUT..... I noticed that the wheels looked like they didn't lower the same distance when in the down position. I started measuring things, and found that the urethane "bumpers" are not the same length. I pulled them out and, sure enough, they are a lot different. They acted different during the extend and retract action, too. The long one would operate smoothly in both directions, but the short one would act like you were pushing it over center about half way up, then it would move easily into the well. It acted the same way coming down. All this is with the linkages and cables disconnected, so the only thing coming into play is the gear itself with the urethane bumpers attached. I assume that the difference in length of the urethane is causing the mid-point restriction (almost like you are trying to slightly compress the urethane). the question is which one, if either, is correct. should I turn down the long one to match the short one, or buy a new one for the short side. I am including a pic of both of them to help explain.
Thanks,
Louie
