My partner and I are doing an annual inspection on a Diamond Katana with Rotax 912F3 engine. The maintenance manual states that EVANS or equivalent waterless coolant must be used. By the smell and color (orange) of the coolant in the system at the moment and the lack of required sticker/label that states only EVANS to be used, I suspect it is regular antifreeze/water mix.
My question:
How can I tell if the current contents in the system is EVANS? The previous coolant system flushing logbook entry made no statement regarding the type of coolant which replenished the system.
If it is EVANS then nothing needs to be done. If it is regular antifreeze we'll have to flush and refill with EVANS and install sticker/label reflecting this fact.
Any help determining if this is EVANS will be appreciated.

When I put the recommended "waterless coolant" in my Rotax, experimental, I
was obligated to make that notation in the engine log book. The kind of
coolant should be in your log when the owner changed it according to the SB
that was issued by Rotax.

Yes, it is SUPPOSED to be, but it isn't mentioned in the logbook entry about the coolant system flushing or anywhere else in the nine year history of this engine. That is one of the reasons I suspect it is NOT EVANS. My question is how to determine by looking, smelling, testing (not tasting) the contents to determine if it is indeed EVANS.

I figured the log wasnt filled out or you would have had your answer. Just
said so for sense of completeness. I remember when I switched over to the
waterless stuff, I could not tell any difference except that the factory
engine came with blue coolant and the waterless was orange. Maybe email the
coolant manufacturer and ask them. I have always found manufacturers to be
helpful. Maybe they can give you a trick like sp. gr. or something.

Hi Guys,
The orange coolant is a premix 50/50 and not Evans. The blue factory coolant used by many dealers is Dex-Cool. Do not mix other coolants with Dex-Cool, it doesn't play well with some other coolants. Some might mix, but others have reactions. Dex-cool is a 60/40 mix as well. This would be better diluted a little to a 50/50. Use only distilled water when putting water into your system.
I have used Evans for years and I put it in my Flight Design CT. I like Evans, but in my CT it wasn't the right choice. This increased my CHT temps by 30f-40f. Evans will state this in the literature. This caused me to over heat in the warmer months. Water will absorb and transfer heat at a better rate. Your 50/50 coolant is good for temps up to a max of 275F and Evans is good up to a max of 375F. The reason for Evans is that some Rotax installations do overheat and boil over or run too high a temp during normal operations. If the temps rise too high then a couple of spots in the engine may vaporize the coolant and then that area would over heat and cause damage.
You do not have to use Evans. You have the option as per the SB to install a coolant gage and use 248F for a new max CHT temp. This may be a better option in some cases. I live in the desert and in the summer the Evans caused overheating at times. I was forced to go back to 50/50 to keep my CHT temps down. I do not have that over heat issue any longer during the warm months.
If you switch to Evans you will need to buy a gal of the prep and flush your system. One gal. of Evans coolant will be enough. Cost for Evans coolant is about $25 a gal.
If you have a Dynon D120 it is capable of reading a coolant sensor.

What is the max CHT and coolant temp when using Evans?
