Noel,
I agree with you on the functionality of the side windows but I have seen a couple of Foxes where the builder has simply covered them over and in my opinion it looks a bit odd. Besides, to cover this area, seal, prime and paint, you would have much more effort and time into it than simply replacing the windows. Just my opinion, to each his own.

You're forgetting the windows are sewn in and all the finishing you mention
would have to be done anyway.
Another idea would be to install inspection port rings and attach Plexiglas
to them. Nice porthole windows reminiscent of the DHC-2 Beaver....nah too
much like work. Maybe a decal of a window.

Noel,
I was referring to retrofitting with the windows from Blue Sky Aviation, not with the sewn-in windows in which case, you're right, there would be much more work than simply covering it over. With the Blue Sky windows you simply cut out the old fabric and install the window and frame using the supplied brackets...it is really pretty slick.
I like your decal idea...you could get an airbrush artist to paint the window on and show a terrified passenger, green-faced and all.

All,
My experience with not having the small windows, I had a Model 4 XL that did
not have them, I found myself wishing I did when I was in tight ground taxi
situations around hangers and parked planes as well as when I would fly
formation with other aircraft, found myself leaning forward to cop a peak
around the end of the door window, I am re-building a 5 now and am putting
in as much window as I can, full Lexan doors, full Lexan turtle deck cover
and small windows.

Nah... I'd just bang something together here on the 'puter and e-mail it to the local decal shop for printing... That's what I did for my tail logo.
A copy of that logo isat the top left of the picture.

Lloyd,
Don't forget to shade the skylight and turtledeck before
installation. I wish I had.

Guy,
Too late, all the glass is in, but just out of curiosity, how did you shade
them? My turtle deck was already shaded but the main windscreen is clear,
door glass is shaded.

Mine isn't, that's why I suggested it. I fly in my own
little microwave oven. I have to admit it's nice in the winter,
however. When I replace my window I'll take it to the guys that did
my car. They put a rather permanent coating on the windows that
blocked 97% of the UV without blocking much of the light. It works
and has lasted six years without visible degradation. I don't know
their process.

Guy,
I hear what you are saying, my 4 had all clear glass, and in the hot weather
here, (right around Oshkosh time) it can be a cooker. What I did on the 4
was to fab door latches that would allow me to either close the door tight
or have it a half inch open, it was just enough to get a nice breeze in the
cockpit without blowing everything around, I plan to install them on the 5
as well, however, they will not keep the UV out.

I may be wrong here but I thought that all clear glass (and plexi) filtered out UV, that is why you don't get a sunburn through the glass even thought the sun is beating down on you. It does not filter the radiant heat though, that is where the microwave effect comes in. Like I said, I could be wrong but I have never been sunburned through a window and the UV rays are what produce the burn.
Having said this, I wish i would have gone with the "smoked" doors and windscreen because the tint will reduce the temp in the cabin a bit.

One of the small car windshield shades...the cloth ones with a wire hoop rim...fits perfectly between the tubing and the skylight to block the sun on those hot days. It is cheap and easy, folds up small and weighs nothing. I think I bought mine at wall Mart for a couple bucks. It is very handy and effective if you have to park the plane if the sun for a while too.
