Hi all,

my M14p consumes a good 2 quarts of oil during aerobatic flight (at) 82% and
full throttle.
The engine is a little wet from oil from various parts but nothing like
spilling a quart over the engine each hour. Also the lower fusselage isn't
soaked more than other Yaks after such flight. Olny thing that surprised me
was some oil in the intake tube and the area just upstream of the intake
valve of cylinder #8 when I had to remove the tube for other reasons (not
sure whether this goes for the other cylinders too). Usually there is only
little oil dripping from the engine during parking and after pulling through
the prop and most of it from the intake drain. However I was told that my
engine is smoking quite more than others during start.
Since I believe it burns the oil while running at high power settings, I
would like to know how to troubelshoot into this.
Would a compression-check reveal a worn oilring or the other way around,
would a good compression necessarily mean there is no problem in this
cylinder? Would a boroscope-inspection into the cylinders tell me something
about it?
Could it be too much play in the valve guide making a path for oil from the
rocker-box?
Could it be a bad gasket in the supercharger binging oil into the intake
system?
How to tell without disassembling the whole engine?
Any idea would be much appreciated.

You probably have a minor oil leak. This would not be unusual. Smile

I use the following method to find leaks... seems to work pretty well.

"They" make a siphon hose spray nozzle attachment for air compressors.  Any large hardware store should have one.

Take the cowls both off and give the engine a good hosing down with mineral spirits... if it's pretty oily, expect that you'll use at least a gallon, probably two of mineral spirits.

Don't use anything more aggressive than mineral spirits, make sure you do it outside, and put drip pans under the engine to cut down on the mess.

Eventually you'll get the engine completely degreased and dry.

Run the airplane up, preferably with you at the controls and a mechanic who's done this sort of thing before watching the engine. Obviously being anywhere near the prop while it's running is extremely dangerous.

Either the leak will be immediately obvious, or you'll discover that you didn't get the engine as clean and dry as you'd thought (I usually fall into this category) and you'll have to spray it down more.

Things to pay paraticular attention to:

Valve cover edges.
Rocker arm bolts.
Cylinder base gaskets.
Pushrod tube ends.
Oil lines and hose connections.

As soon as you start doing aerobatics you will get a false reading about engine oil consumption. The only way to see what the engine itself is using is in straight and level flight.

To get an accurate figure, the engine should be fully warmed up; oil level checked; fly for a minimum of forty five minutes at a variety of power settings; land; properly scavenge oil out of the engine into the tank and measure oil level.

There are a variety of potential problems in the oil system that can cause excessive oil consumption in aerobatics - by throwing it out, but clearly nothing to do with the engine itself.

A lot of smoke on start-up can be caused by a worn engine, or by a faulty valve in the oil pump, allowing oil to migrate from the tank into the engine.

Obviously valve-guides; worn piston-rings will increase fuel consumption.

A worn seal between supercharger and crankcase would normally be seen by oil in the manifold pressure gauge.

Guys
There is another way to find a leak. The automotive industry has produced a die that is added to the oil. Comes in one ounce bottles for about $5 per bottle. I would suggest three bottles. The oil die shows up under ultraviolet light. Start the engine, let it run for a while, and after shutdown follow the track to the source with your 60's black light. Washing the engine first is always nice, but not necessary.

I too have excessive oil consumption with my Yak, at least 2 quarts an hour during acro. I have done a compression check and looked for the obvious leaks. The engine is leaking a little and I've tried to isolate the leak/s. Today I put two bottles oil dye in the tank and ran the engine for a total of 20 minutes at various power settings, as high as 80%. Even with the hangars doors closed in total darkness I couldn't see any dye with the black light. I read here recently that someone cured there oil consumption problem after finding a leaking cylinder base gasket. My base gaskets seem to be fine so I'm still trying to resolve the excessive consumption. Any other thoughts? Thanks,

You may want to make sure the oil separator is plugged or loose connections.

Jim, any danger of damage/corrosion to the engine with this dye? Some dies are pretty high acid compounds.

How many liters are putting in the tank before you go flying. I have found that If I am doing acro that anything over 10 liters going to be dumped down the side of the fuselage.
