Hello,
My name is Craig Kennedy. New here. This thread got me laughing as I recently purchased a 65 560F. Months of supposed maintenance and new fuel cells, with lots of pictures to show the wife on progress, I went to TN to bring the new "baby" home. The baby is now sitting in TX, half way home, 2 engines making metal, fuel dripping, and seeping, and all the pictures are of parts being removed for overhaul. Something makes me think the wife will not be adopting this bird any time soon!

Two engines making metal…wow. Reminds me of the experience on my 680F. Both engines were pressurizing the crankcase and blowing massive amounts of oil out the breather (at the same time, 5.5 hours out of annual), with one engine throwing a rod in flight, and the other making huge amounts of metal. Had to overhaul both engines. I would be very interested to know what caused both your engines to make metal.

7 years of sitting, with I suspect a number of broken rings given the corrosion inside the cracks.

Had to get new propellers (as well as new engines) so, not flying yet. JPI engine analyzer being installed now, along with many other replaced items (vacuum pumps, generator, hoses, etc). Hopefully, we’ll be flying in another 3 weeks.

Randy (and others),
When replacing the hoses be sure to replace the most important one on the plane. This would be the hose that goes to the Hyd. Pressure gageinside the plane. When I first purchased N680RR my former mechanic was to change all of the hoses on the plane, however, he did not replace that hose. Sometime, later it broke which ruined my favorite cowboy boots, my girlfriend's purse, the carpet, and a large part of the interior including the leather on some seats. Surprising how much damage five gallons of Skydrol can do to the inside of a plane.
Regards,
Moe

Barry,
I own serial # 173, a 1954 model straight 560. The logs show it flying out of New York I believe. I found a small patch of fabric stuck to one of the re-upholstered seats - black and white with turquoise and some black leather. It's been repainted but I did find some robins egg blue in spots where the repaint peeled.
I'd appreciate any history you might have on this bird?

I still have the Apache 150’s that I got my multi rating in. It is a vintage 1957 and it is a blast to fly. It serves as a spare for when the 500S is in service. My wife especially likes the Apache because the “tube” is an excellent “OH-SHIT” handle as she is not the most avid flyer. The tube is a carry over from the preceding tube and fabric structure.

There really should be a PA23 club, but there never will be. Near as I
can tell, an apache is like a fat girl. Almost everyone has had a great
experience with one in the past, but nobody is willing to admit it.
