I purchased an eight year old Kitfox Lite project a month ago. It was very complete, except for lack of templates. I'm located in northern Illinois. My problem is removing the removable plastic film from the .015 aluminum on the flaperons. It seems to be age hardened and comes off in small pieces, sometimes fleck by fleck. I'm looking for suggestions to get it off the flaperons. Thanks in advance. Charles Peterson

Lots of luck!! I've been dealing with the same thing on my Kitfox 4. Denatured alcohol does dissolve the glue, but it has to be able to get under the plastic. Check the archives, lots of others with the same problem and some different "solutions" Jim Chuk Avids Kitfox 4 Mn

Chuck, there are tons of information in the archives about this very topic that pops up about every six months or so. You'll probably get a bunch of replies because you are not alone. Some have had good luck with a rag soaked in kerosene. Leave it lay there for an hour or so and see what happens. Others have used WD40 allowing it soak into the film. Whatever you use, just ensure it isn't reactive to the foam inside the flaperon. That's what holds it's shape and gives it more strength.
Good luck,

Paper towels soaked with mineral spirits/paint thinner laid on the
flaperon for a few hours will penetrate the bond, and the film will
lift off with perhaps some mild rubbing. Keep the towels soaked, but
away from the hinge slots.

Charles,
Go to Home Depot or Lowes and get some of the thick, cheap, paint remover. Soak the film with the stuff and keep it wet for about 20 minutesor until it starts to 'bubble'. With a plastic scrapper gently get under a corner and lift it up continuing to lightly scrape across the flaperon. Be careful not to let the goop get inside the flaperon and 'melt' the foam ribs. Also, I would recommend doing no more than 2 or 3 feet at a time. It's a messy job, but it will work. My flaperons were covered for about 10 years and they came clean just fine, however, it was a lot of work.
Good luck,
Rick Weiss

For those who are STILL storing the flaperons with the film on them: When I tried to remove my film after several years of storage I found one side came off easy, but the other I had to peal off in tiny pieces. The flaperons were hung on a shop wall. The side against the wall came off easy. The side exposed to the room, and light? was difficult. Maybe wrapping with brown paper then storing would help. Can't hurt.

Thanks to all who responded regarding removing the almost unremoveable plastic film from my flaperons. After a weeks worth of peeling and picking, here is what worked for me. I initially tried a heat gun, but the heat scared me. A calibrated iron was tried. I tried all the solvents suggested from the list plus more, all the solvents around the house. None of the solvents really worked. Denatured ethyl alcohol might have had a minor effect, but not enough to get the job done. Heat works, but must be carefully controlled. Our hot water heaters are set about 140 degrees F. I cannot keep my hands under the hot water spiggot. Figuring that 140 degrees or less is safe (since the epoxy is labeled to 250) I did a lot of switching the gun on and off and covering small areas (estimated 10 square inches) and kept my hands on the treated area. This is to report what worked for me. I used heat on only the most difficult areas, where crazing and cracks could be observed in the film. 80% of the film was removed by peeling very slowly and carefully. When I got to the tough parts, encouragement from my wife and the heat gun got me through it. The reward for perseverance and sore fingers is clean flaperons which are now attached to the Lite and (almost) ready to go.
