It's been while since I've done any maintenance worth
talking about, but this weekend I did have some interesting
stuff with good results.

I know we've talked about wheel shimmy in the past, and
how getting the nosewheel all perfect is part of a fix for
some people. I do believe though that the mains on the
-10 have the tendency to "walk" back and forth, and that this
is probably a cause of shimmy for some people who *think* they
have nose shimmy. We've talked about balancing tires and
how some people had good results...but this weekend I finally
got to put on my first new set of tires at 330 hours and
I balanced them out. Turns out I now believe balancing is
key.

I also replaced my brake lines from fuselage to wheel with
some great braided teflon ones. Most people have heard
of builders with cracked lines around that lower loop,
but I know that at least one person had a nearly severed
line up on the top area too, from gear flex. I decided to
head it all off and finally install the lines I bought a few
months ago.

One other thing I did was to take the advice of another
builder and replace my caliper piston o-rings with
some higher temp Viton ones...especially since he was
nice enough to get me some milspec ones for free.
The combination of lines and piston o-rings though, did
cause me to have to bleed the brakes, of course...so that's
good.

I've got the whole thing written up here:

Tim,

I second the opinion on those Monster retreads. I had the same uneven wear on the Cardinal and also went with the retreads from the Aviation Consumer recommendation. They have held up very well and do NOT show the uneven wear on the outer edge that the the normal tires exhibited. I did have to replace one as it seems my left brake was stuck on landing and a flat spot was worn into it. I'm convinced that if this was a normal and not a Monster retread, the tire would have failed.

As for the balancing, I usually take it to the local motorcycle shop for $10 per tire. How may time would I have to use that balancer before it pays for itself?

Hey Tim,

Great write-up. As usual your tips and tricks are priceless to this
group. A question about those brake lines. Since the braided lines are
flexible is the loop around to the caliper still necessary? Can you
share the p/n from Bonaco?

Thanks!

Have your local airport hose shop make you some. Measure from the tip of the
flare to the tip of the flare with a flexible tape on your selected routing.

One other point. You can secure each Teflon line with 3 sets of two Adel
clamps. Clamp the leg with one and clamp the line with the other, then use a
single bolt to connect the two. This will prevent any vibration/abrasion of
the steel line and steel powder coat on the leg.

When I did the mods on my brake lines in the cabin ..... passenger side

to pilot side .... I used the fuseable silicone tape instead of adel
clamps ..... lighter and more compact ...... just google 'rescue tape'.
I bought their 6 roll special package ..... and that's a lifetime supply
... because it stretches a whole lot when it's applied.

I don't know if it's still completely necessary. If you can route the
line down under the fairing with no interference and bend it back, you
could be fine. But, this weekend I took my calipers off and that was
made easy by the loop, since I had plenty of flex to pull them out and
work with them. I guess I just did my routing the original plans
way and didn't worry too much about it. Other than a couple of ounces
of weight I don't really see a big downside either...it allowed me to
make the lines nice and secure to the fairing back plate.

I didn't use clamps down the gear legs but did those more like the
plans method too, because I didn't want to have the leg fairings
have to expand to fit over the clamps. With the friction tape
under them and then tape securing them, and the anti-chafe clear
plastic coating over the stainless braid, I don't think I'll ever
see any wear anywhere. For the first 330 hours with the other
setup I had zero issues, and this install is even nicer.

From Bonaco there wasn't a part number, as they were custom....but
included this line in my write-up:

"The important thing when odering is to tell them EXACTLY what you
want.... 46" -3 size hose with -4 size straight fittings, WITH the
chafe guard protective rubber coating."

Well, the Monster retreads aren't available in the RV-10
size, so that's why I had to go with their
"High Performance Retreads". I don't know that I'd want
to stuff Monster Retreads under our fairings anyway.
But, from a tire rubber perspective, they sound like they'll
wear well. Next time though, it's genuine Goodyear's for
me. The most recent Aviation Consumer review kind of
points to the value of spending more on the tires and having
them last longer.

BTW: With the wear pattern I had, I had one tire start showing
cords, and you could put fingers on the inside and outside
and feel the tire was very thin....so for all you folks
running the tires like that, pay close attention. When you
see cords, you're really past replacement time by a bit...
there's not much tire there.

Regarding the balancer.... Well, my local shop likes to
charge $35, which is a total ripoff, but in the end,
it's a tool, and most tools tend to be long-term investments
and just plain nice to have. Things like jackstands,
balancers, and stuff like that can make it much more
convenient to just pop off a tire and check it's balance
on a whim. I think tool ownership can help motivate
perhaps more meticulous maintenance levels, because you're
not hindered for time and convenience or cost. Not only
that, but this same balancer could be used to balance my
lawn mower blades and stuff too. Smile

I would agree having the right tool is worth the investment. There are
inexpensive options at HF and I can pretty much balance a tire using a pipe
as I did for numerous motorcycle changes. I know it works from experience
but in the end having the right tool would certainly expedite the time to do
it. Also I don't trust the shop to do something I "know" is right, like the
time they charged me for it and I know it wasn't done since the weight was
right where I marked it..
