I just purchased a Central Pneumatic brand air/hydraulic riveter, #93458,  from Harbor Freight.  According to the instructions, it needs to be  serviced with hydraulic fluid before use. The same instructions explain how to  removed the bottom cover and add the fluid.  



BUT, I am completely  unable to get the bottom cover off, even after using some PB Blaster and my 1/2"  breaker bar on the 15/16" hex part provided.  Does anyone know if there is  some trick to this?  I can see any locking pin or similar problem in the  drawing. 



Is there a different way to add the fluid?  Any other  ideas?

I have the same tool, and, for me, the instructions were not very helpful. 

I used it without a proper priming for a year before I got it working 

right. Now, it's great.



The cylinder cap for the pneumatic cylinder is sealed with an O-ring, and 

does not need to be very tight. I am able to loosen mine with the supplied 

spanner, with a counterclockwise turn. Once you remove the cylinder cap and 

the piston assembly, the important thing (I now realize  ) is to fill 

the central cylinder of the handle with oil (I used pneumatic oil from 

Lowes). I misunderstood the instructions and thought they were talking 

about filling the top of the pneumatic cylinder with oil, up to the top of 

the "frame." So I failed to fill the cylinder in the handle. As a result 

the rivet gun required 2 or 3 cycles to pop a rivet. Now, with the proper 

oil fill, it pops on the first pull. Ah, wisdom. Once it's properly 

primmed, I believe that just putting 4 or 5 drops of oil into the air inlet 

a the start of a work session will keep the oil level up. It's a good tool. 

The instructions were not very helpful.



I don't know what to advise if the spanner will not loosen the cylinder 

cap. Mine comes off easily.

I got a riveter from harbor freight 5 years ago, and have pulled 20,000 rivets with very few problems. Did not add any oil, except a few drops in the air hole every once in a while. Perhaps they have changed, but why not try it  as is?????...................Fred.........N9701.....N9601......Ca

I had the same problem. I did not follow the instructions and only oiled the air inlet. Seems to work ok.



The first one did not work though and I sent it back.

Hey Andy  .I had the same problem .The spanner  tool that they send is much too weak .I locked mine up in a vise and got very  rough with it .It will come loose .

Oh ,Andy I reread your post .Do nothing about  adding oil before the first use .These instructions should not be there ,the gun  is ready for use right out of the box.You can tell when oil is needed by how bad  the riveter is pulling the rivets .Again ready for use out of the box ,no need  for priming .The only oil you need to add is a few drops into the air inlet  before each use  .

Harbor Freight rivet gun maintenance .... Whazzat???



I've been using mine for two planes now .... I always assumed

maintenance was replacing it when it quit working ... Mine still hasn't

quit. Despite drop testing it, etc.



Ok, I do occasionally drop some oil in the air inlet.

Mine wouldn't come off ether. I used a vice and a large pipe wrench. When I got it open, it had oil in it already! Well now it looks like I took a pipe wrench to an aluminum cover! Try it, if it works use it. If you want put oil in the air inlet, just to be sure of lubrication
