Congratulations, James. I'll about guarantee that once you immerse yourself in ham culture, you'll be doing a lot more than just APRS tracking.

Last night I was feeding the mosquitoes after dark, adjusting a homemade HF portable vertical antenna cobbled from PVC water pipe, an old fishing rod and bits of wire. Day before that, I was doing the same, getting myself soaked in an afternoon shower. Sometimes you'll catch me on some tiny island somewhere putting it on the air for the island hunters with a battery powered 10 watt sideband rig or a one watt CW transceiver I scratch-built myself. This stuff gets in the blood much like flying.

Your FCC amateur call sign will become a moniker you wear with as much pride as your formation/RV group call sign. Well, okay, that's a bit over the top, but it will be close Smile

I'm still building (and building, and building) my RV-7, but started to
play with tracking too. I stuck a homebrew 300ohm twinlead 2M antenna in
the baggage compartment of my Citabria. With the hockey-puck GPS up in
the greenhouse of the Citabria, I'm able to get tracking signals out once
I'm above 1000ft or so.

Bear in mind that this antenna is a hack, and I have it installed in the
baggage compartment by using a baggie twist-tie to hang it from a shoulder
strap fitting. This puts it in a metal cage (admittedly a sparse one) which
is also not ideal. I'm using a plain jane Micro-Trak so am (currently) only
pushing 300mw. BUT IT WORKS! Smile

I'd use a better antenna, but don't want to file a FAA 337 form just to
be able to install one on the Citabria. So I'll wait until I've got the
RV finished to worry too much about it. Smile You can hit :

... if you want to see my tracks.

Stormy is right. It is contageous. I'm a brand-new ham and confess that I'm
already studying for the General exam. I'm trying to learn aobut Winlink and
other data/messaging techniques so I can send more lengty messages than APRS
permits. I can just see getting an e-mail from the wife, while I'm at 9,500ft,
asking me to pick up some milk and a loaf of bread on the way home. Smile

Fun stuff.

I might give that a try after while as well (General exam) even though I am not sure if there is any advantage for me. Seems like now is the time to do it if ever.

Depends on your ultimate interests. Miriam has been a Tech=-plus for 28 years, and hasn't been on the radio at all in over ten, thanks to the advent of cell phones, while I could not even consider a ham ticket to be of value without HF privileges - the more the better. I'm going to pursue that final step to Extra very soon. Already studying, in fact.
