Can anyone tell me how many USABLE gallons of fuel there are in a 15 gallon 601XL tank? (My DAR instructed me to placard the fuel selector with usable gallons in each tank)

Hi Jay,

I'm afraid you will have to measure the useable fuel in your
plane. This will vary from one plane to another and one tank to another.

Each tank will have its own maximum fuel it can hold before venting
it overboard. Also, the geometry of the fuel line with relation to
the tank will determine how much remains when the line stops delivering fuel.

One little point. You don't want the fuel line drawing fuel from the
absolute bottom of the tank since that is where water will accumulate.

Good luck,

Paul

Hi Jay,

I can't tell you the amount of usable fuel in an XL. I have an HDS with an 11 (10.5 usable) gallon tank in each wing and an 8 (8 usable ) gallon header tank. I filled all tanks with a measured amount of fuel and then drained them and measured the amount of fuel removed. Remember this is only a static test.

Oshkosh Update

I fly out of Oshkosh and went for a flight today for about 2 Hrs. The worst part was trying to contact ground. There was so much traffic it took about 20 Min. to get through. I don't think they have their ground people out yet to direct traffic to the parking areas so they were talking them to parking and camping spots. Once in the air it was better. When I came back in there were 3 or 4 of us landing on 36 and about the same landing on 27. The good news is the new TOWER is open and the radar is up and running. With the extra traffic the radar is great to have here.

I will have my plane on the flight line again this year and look forward to meeting some of the people from this list. I hope that you all have a good flight. I will have to get a lot of rest because I have about a 1/2 mile to taxi on Sunday.

Fly and drive safely and see you on the flight line,

AL from Oshkosh

I suppose I should have asked my question about ZAC supplied 15 gal fuel tanks. I don't know why those would be any different from mine.
