New CJ owner with a 285 Housai.
What are the pro's and cons of MMO in the fuel and or oil?

For what it's worth use religiously. No ill effects and I think the engine runs better. Now will I admit, could it all be my imagination .... absolutely

Some people think it is the best thing since sliced bread. Other people think that it is a waste of time and/or money, and every point between the two.
There is no definitive data. There are good arguments on both sides.
I did not run it. After two hundred hours I had two cylinders in an M-14P with leaded valves sticking. Keep in mind I have no vanes on the front of my cowl, so the engine runs cooler than most.
I started to use it, and have had no leaded or sticking valves since then. Could easily be coincidence, I have no idea.
I put in two quarts of it in the oil and run the engine hard right before an oil change. This APPEARS to help get bad looking goop out of the engine. But... there are pro's and con's for doing this as well!
In the end, it is up to you.
I like the way it smells, so I use it.

Hi Doc,
Thanks! Your post is pretty much what I've heard. I am worried that the carbon coming free will somehow find its way intro the ball bearings in that beast of an engine and wreak havoc. No doubt that's why you run only an hour before the oil change.
How much mmo do you add to the oil and fuel?

Hi Keith,
You should be aware that the MMO thing has "stirred things up" on this list more times than most of us want count. You'll get some answers (many tongue in cheek) from the "listers regular experts". However, most people no longer give a hoot what others think about MMO in their engines oil/gas/air system/body cavities, etc
So...have a good time "shaking things up".

I'm not really sure how to read you there Reb, but I'm new and quite honestly I do care what others with much more round engine time than me think. After that, I figure I'm smart enough to draw my own conclusions.
btw, my post was not intended to raise the blood pressure of the veterans on this list.

I put in 4 oz. per 15 gal of fuel.
Doc
Ah hell, Potus, can't resist!
Some will remember from a few years back I lamented the fluffy white Yap dog the inhabits my neighbors back yard during those most irritating times like when your using the mens out door urinal. Peaing on that irritating clinging climbing vine that emits some homo lilac smell when it is in bloom but at the othertimes it simply grows all over the damned place always getting in my face when cutting the grass or wrapped around the ceiling fan on the patio chocking it to death generally agqain when I'm trying to cool off after cutting something hideous out of the back yard like that damned plant!
Well this pomerafritziepoo what ever that damned puff ball with a face that looks like it was just stopped by a frying pan fires up with its 6000 db YAP. You know the type..sits in the owners lap drooling all over itself with a tongue sticking out that would make any muff diver proud? The one that is all furball and has an irritating hi frequency YAP. A YAP YAP that will make you piss all over yourself when it fires up on the other side to fence next to that stupid vine. The vine I'm to kill with yellow rain. You know the type piss ant dog.
Anyway frustratiton got the better of me, high on the success I'd had with that stupid pesky cat that left paw prints all over my nice once shiney silver sports car. It was time to strike. By the way, the scatchs buff out with MMO. After that purple haze the cat sprayed behind as it lauched off the car, it buffs right off!
Well the perfect opportunity presented itself! I caught that pesky fluff-a-poo trying to poke its' what some would call a nose with tongue from hell proturding between the slates of my fence attempting to sniff the ass of my black lab. Freeking HomO! Well I've keep a Hypo full of MMO just for such an occassion! Being quick to retrive the syringe pre loaded with 20 cc's of reddish purple MMO I shot that little Homo fluff ball square on that lizard tongue with all twenty! Squirted right by the neighbor without him even noticing the purple steam squirting right by his leg as he stood next to the fence in the blink of the eye.
Well it choked off a YAP right square in mid YA with a sputter! It spun, it twirled, it rolled, it back flipped, and shit purple right there on the owner's foot! Now I've always known that MMO is fast but not that fast. The neighbor did not know what to think with purple haze squirted square on his foot! I was choking off a belly laugh.
Have not heard a yap out of that fluffy pomofritzapoo whatever its' call since. Oh did you know MMO will stain a white fluffy YAP-A-POO whatever's fur reddish purple? It will. Do you know what a skinned (clipped to the skin) reddish purple fluff-a-yap-a-poo looks like after the owner has them clipped to get rid of that previously white now stained purple furball coat? Purple! Now it's an even uglier pomafritzayapapoo whatever skinned down to its bar ass hide with that fresh flattened frying pan face. But it does not stick its' sawed off nose with that tongue that has to be atleast three freeking feet long through the fence anymore and it does not try to sniff my lab's ass anymore. It probably fears another skunk shot from my lab! Has not YAPPED at me since either!
So there it is, Potus, the 99th way to use MMO in everyday living to rid oneself of those pesky yap dogs...Humm...come to think of it, I have not heard him yap at all? Hmmm...maybe the 100th way to use MMO...Laryngeal cautery!....Liquid laryngectomy that is.

Just for the record several years ago I spoke with both a Phillips and Shell oils engineers about this subject. Both of them said in no uncertain terms to NOT put MMO in their aviation oils. That all it would do is degrade the performance of oils that their companies spent millions developing for aircraft engines. That was better than hearsay and wife's tails for me. But I do add it to the fuel and have had no valve or upper cylinder problems whatsoever, that's over 1000hrs now.

Just talked to Jill yesterday about Marvel Mystery Oil and she did not recommend it.
She had discussed this with a Phillips rep and said that it has "corrosive properties".....
I've always been pleased with Phillips 25-60 Radial Engine Oil

2 dichloro Benzene. Interesting. Now wonder the YAK likes it so much. We are
giving it a source of Benzene an aeromatic hydrocarbon.
The rest is old wives tales.

I would love to hear where the corrosion property is found and what form it takes. Any pictures would help.
The issue is much like the damage from ethanol in MOGAS being used in aircraft engines. No one is specific on the damage just that it might just cause some. Some use it, some avoid it, some fear it.

Agree and I was wrong. The active ingredient is 2-dichloro-benzene. So as best I can tell it is the release of chloride with the combustion of benzene that is the corrosive agent.
Incidentally, Benzene is an aromatic compound therefore the sweet smell.
Need to go back to my organic chemistry to verify that.
Any chemical engineers on the list?
