In trying to complete an older 601 project, where can a schematic or flow 

diagram be found for the wing tanks, fuel pump and that funny looking 

rectangular gascolator with a total of 4 tapped holes?? I'm confused and not 

making much headway helping my buddy. Thanks.

Every homebuilt is unique, so it's anybody's guess how the original  

builder plumbed up his fuel system. You'll probably have to just  

physically trace out all the hoses and figure out where they lead.  

I've never seen a gascolator with four holes, they generally have just  

an inlet and an outlet. If it has a manufacturer's name and model  

number on it, you might be able to get some information from the  

manufacturer.

My buddy didn't get any fuel drawings when he  bought the project. The Construction manual just shows a pump and a wing  tank.

  

 The rectangular aluminum gascolator has 2 input, 1  output and a drain hole. Don't know where to mount?

 What I don't see is any tank selector switch/valve  in his parts box...

 Could someone  email that 6-s-1 sheet  showing the entire layout?

The gascolator should be mounted at the lowest point in the system. The lines from the gas tanks should slope straight downhill to the gascolator and then the line from the gascolator should run uphill to the engine. The lines should be arranged so that any water in the system can run downhill to settle in the gascolator. There should be no dips in the lines that can allow water to settle out in the line. There should be a quick drain valve in the bottom of the gascolator to check for water during preflight.



A low wing airplane should definitely have some way to select the gas tanks individually, either individual valves for each tank or a tank selector valve. Running on both tanks should be avoided because, in a low fuel situation, it is possible to suck air from an empty tank and starve the engine even if the other tank still has fuel in it. This situation is unlikely in a high wing plane due to the head pressure of the fuel in the tanks. The original plans for the 601XL and the wing tank option for the HD called for a separate valve for each tank. My plane is set up this way and it works fine you just have to remember to turn on one tank before turning off the other. A fuel selector valve adds a little bit of convenience but generally costs more than individual valves.

Even if you have an engine driven fuel pump, I would recommend that you install an electric boost pump in a low wing airplane. A good place for it is near the outlet of the gascolator at the low point of the system. This should ensure that the boost pump inlet is always gravity fed so it doesn't have to suck fuel uphill. During climb out after takeoff, an engine driven fuel pump on a low wing plane will probably be sucking fuel uphill. On a very hot day, or with a hot engine compartment, this can lead to vapor lock and loss of power at the worst possible time, especially if you are burning auto gas. A boost will prevent this situation.

Dick, I just went and looked at my fuel system.  The 4 hole funny looking gasolator that you talked about is the one supplied with the locker tank option.  You have a drain hole, an outlet hole, and 2 inlets, one for each tank.  I have this one mounted behind the pilot seat.  This is the lowest point in the fuel lines from the locker tanks.  There is a second gasolator supplied with the original kit and it mounts to the bottom of the firewall and has three holes; one inlet, one outlet, and the drain.

 This is the original crude gascolator supplied with the kit we used this as 

a water trap on the cockpit floor from wing tanks before pumping fuel up to 

our header tank & use a aircraft type gascolator (Aircraft Spruce ? P/N 

10550 which contains a fine filter above the sedement bowl on the low point 

from header tank. PS if you use this with Mogas you need to buy a viton 

gasket & change original)



 You donot say if you are using a header tank or have a engine fuel pump we 

have a facet 40106 in parallel with our continental 0 -200 engine pump, some 

have placed this as a booster pump in series.

If you are using the wing tanks only some have placed a facet pump at the 

tank outlet in each wing check the archives



The original zenith drawing showed the fuel runing from each wing tank via 

an individual isolating valve to eitherside of your aluminum box gascolator 

which was bolted to cockpit floor with a drain valve from bottom hole 

through floor. & the other outlet as an input to an electric fuel pump to 

engine or header tank..

 We had to fit a tank selector switch for our UK inspector you will probably 

not have too in US
