AMD gets their antennas from Comant. The NAV antenna is a CI 158, mounted on
the belly just in front of the rudder cables; the two COM antennas are CI
122s, mounted on the belly just forward of the rear spar; the transponder
antenna is a CI 101, mounted on the right side of the belly just aft of the
front spar; and there's a CI 177 VHF-FM antenna mounted to the center of the
turtledeck just aft of the rear baggage compartment bulkhead. The ELT
antenna is about a foot aft of the tip of the CI 177, with the OAT probe in
between.

my 2 cents , look at certificated planes for ideas but a fiberglass com
antenna eats up over 1 hp so go with stainless (spruce) and it's cheaper too
and I plan to put it inside the rear of the canopy if it will fit and work
there,
XPONDER antenna. bottom, near the unit to keep cable length short as
possible. It's only about 1 1/2" long so no big deal.
NAV antenna bottom is good if you are not landing on rough stuff where it
could get damaged otherwise as clear of obstructions as possible, turtle
deck or top of vert stab.
Lunch is in Reno today, I'm helping a friend move.

Good subject, Larry. I was planning to mount my COM on the top of the
rudder. I read somewhere that the top of the rudder was a great spot for RV
antennas, and it made sense to me for my 601XL. I bought an AV534L antenna
from Pacific Coast Avionics. It was the the only antenna I found whose base
looked to be small enough to fit on the top of the 601XL rudder.
Then, my EAA tech counselor advised me to mount it on the bottom of the
fuselage. He said that it would be a shame to disturb the smooth air flow
on the top of the A/C and incur the resultant drag. Since the airflow is
pretty turbulent under the A/C, the disturbance from the antenna would be
less significant. I'd love to hear if others have mounted their antenna on
top of the rudder.
I've no plans on a NAV antenna.

Larry,
I've attached a photo showing where my ELT, comm & GPS antennae are
mounted. The transponder antenna is mounted in the floor just ahead of
the wing spar center section.

I've got one com antenna mounted on the belly under the right seat and
one mounted on top of the fuselage just forward of the baggage
compartment bulkhead. I bought them both on eBay. My transponder
antenna is mounted on the belly under the left seat, it's a TED
antenna I bought from Aircraft Spruce. I have a home made nav antenna
mounted on the top of the rudder. I also have a GPS antenna mounted on
the top of the fuselage near the front end of the turtledeck inside
the canopy. My ELT antenna is mounted on the right side of the baggage
compartment so that it sticks up behind the right seat and under the
canopy.

All-
Question on the antennas. I have an exterior antenna that came with the
ELT I bought on E-bay. Is it really going to make much difference speed-wise
if I buy one of the fuselage-internal types?

Hi Bill,
I don't think your ELT will work very well with an internal
antenna. Your metal airplane will shield the radio waves from the
antenna and defeat the purpose.
I'm afraid antennas designed for internal mounting only work with
non-metal airplanes.

Probably not.
You can't really mount one inside the fuselage anyway, the aluminum
skins will block the signal from getting out. I have my ELT whip
mounted so that it is inside the canopy but not blocked by the
aluminum skin. It's mounted to the right side front corner of the
baggage area and sticks up behind the right seat and it's bent to
follow the curve of the canopy. I mounted it there because the ELT is
mounted right next to it on the baggage shelf and it was simple to run
a short cable to the antenna and I didn't want to drill another hole
in the skin.

Comm and transponder antennas shopuld be on the bottom of the aircraft as they will be recieving when up in the air. Either way is fine as long as the antennas are not close to each other you can pretty much put them where ever it pleases you,
