I'm considering buying the care kit for the my prop, has anyone tried this MT care kit? 90 bucks seems high for a few ounces of sealer.
Thanks,

I guess the devil's going to be in the details. What do they claim it will do that's not already in the prop? Surely, if it deposits anything on the surface, it will affect the aerodynamics and that cannot be good without proper testing. If that which it might deposit is too thin to affect aerodynamics, it might not be good for anything, other than a shine, either.

Well they say: "The new Mt-Propeller Car Kit X9 contains a propeller surface cleaning agent and propeller surface sealing agent, based on Nanotechnology in order to refine any propeller surface for rejecting water and dirt, which considerably reduces the accumulation of ice, snow, and bugs." Whew, that's one hell of a sentence. I wonder what "refine means".

Jimbo....... It's the "Sales Lingo" for saying.... Cleans, Polishes and then Seals the surface of your prop blades. It can't do more than that unless you remove the freakin' paint job.......

Smokey,

It looks great. My rocket has a military type paint theme, with a squadron patch on the tail, so the four blade gives it a WW-II type look.

I had a prop "brain fart" so needed a new one, several months was the reply but then Jim Ayers of MT props here in CA told me about a prop John Harmon had for his HR-III (single seat racer) that he didn't like.

Anyway, I was able to get the prop at less than half price and was flying again in weeks instead of months.

I have a very slow rocket anyway. With the two blade hartzell, at 10 to 11 thousand, full throttle would give me about 140 KIAS which trued to about 180 KTAS.
Now, the I get 130-135 indicated and true at about 170 knots. So, I lost about 10 knots at cruise.

Plus side, it is very smooth. Not turbine like but much smoother than the hartzell. Climbs better, it already climbed great so who cares.

Down side, hot starts. Being mostly a jet guy, I don't claim to be a piston expert. I was having problems with backfires during hot starts (flooded method) and one of my friends told me he had a sure fire way to do them. Shut down is normal with the throttle closed and then mixture cut off. Instead of flooding during start, you just put the throttle full open and leave the mixture closed. Hit the start button and a couple of blades later it starts. Of course, now you have to move all the levers at once. With the hartzell, there was some delay in the race to full power so by the time I got the mixture increased and the throttle reduced, the RPM would be up around 800-1000 easily controlled with brakes (remember, I have already replaced one prop).

With the MT, all the weight is in the HUB - so RPM increases faster, so the RPM is now 1200-1300 and the plane doesn't want to sit still. I really like this starting method so I now add one step, I look to make sure that nothing is in front of me and during start, and I just let the plane roll forward a couple of feet while the lever exercise is taking place. It sometimes helps to have the boost pump on to make sure once you are putting new gas into the engine there is enough pressure to clear any vapor lock present. If I don't catch it after the first couple of seconds of running, then a normal prime and normal start seems to work OK (as it appears to have cleared out the cyls).

So overall, I lost some top end speed, have to be careful during hot starts but I was flying sooner verse later, got a $14,000 prop for 6500, and it looks great.

During this time frame, I got to fly with a MT three blade prop and it was very nice. No lost of speed but I couldn't get Jim to trade even up for the four blade. My plane hasn't seen the MT two blade so I know nothing about that one.

Also, I only fly off hard surfaces so no rock dings, etc.

Awesome Gummi, it does look great! I hot start the exact technique you use, my Rose Electronic ignition helps alot. I too have to hit the boost pump for vapor lock. I considered a prop change but $6000 buys alot of gas, and my "D" Hartzell 2 blade (Aztec) works fine.
I have flown alongside my Viper buddy Slim who has a clean HR2 and a "J Twist" Hartzell 2 blade, pretty much equal across the board. Above 10K he does seem to do a little better at lower RPM. Not $6K better... Smile From Boise back to FL (at) 11,500 I saw 10.5 gph at 185 KTAS 55% power, 195-215 over the ground. That's less fuel over the distance than my 160HP RV4!
You gotta like it...

If you get back this way stop by, you're always welcome!
Smokey

Tom

You forgot to mention that your 4 blade propeller was designed for the HR3 with a 380 hp engine. Smile

Getting back on topic, I have a propeller care kit for my MT Propeller, but haven't used it yet.
If someone has already read the instructions, please give me a call. Smile

Jim
