Not sure what most of you have done, but when I saw the extensions supplied with the kit, I knew I needed something different/better. So I machined a new set for myself. Then my neighbor, Mark Carey with a flying 10, told he he sure wished I had made him a set. That was 6 months ago. Last week he called me to tell me that after a hard landing, he broke one of the extensions. So, long story short, I gave him mine, and am now making more. Made out of Aluminum 6061T6, using an AN5 bolt to bolt to the axle nut, instead of the stk AN4. All that's left to do from the user end is drill out the attach hole in the nut, install the AN5 bolt, and drill for a cotter pin.
I am initially making 15 sets and am giving them away for $40 a set including shipping.

I can hardly wait for Ricks question asking me which one in the picture is the one I made!!!!!!

You guys do know that Cleveland Tools stocks these now, right?
So they're available all the time, and all of the drilling is done.
I think they may be $5 or $10 more expensive or something like
that, but just wanted you to know that they are there. Another
builder took that design that I originally made and decided to
build them and distribute them through Cleveland. Nothing
wrong with having multiple sources, but just pointing out that
EVERYONE should really get themselves a set sometime, from
at least somewhere, and Cleveland stocks them. I'm not sure
if they include all the hardware like I did originally, or not,
but I also did include a longer Stainless Steel screw for the
outboard side, because those screws definitely will work themselves
loose if not lock-tite'd in.

Guys really if you can't take two seconds to change the recipient of the email so we all don't get these, at least add do not archive so all of your orders don't show up in every search for axle extension or headset bracket. There is absolutely no reason for your orders to be broadcast out to the group and lodged into the search engine forever, it just poor form.

Don, might I suggest you setup a web page or use some other forum for your order collection. At least ask people to send the orders directly to you. I think it's great you are offering these parts but I'm really tired of all these "I'll take one" emails.

Michael,

Ditto! You beat me to the punch. I don't mind so much the "congratulations" but do we ALL really need to know the "me too" or "sign me up" or "I'll take one."

C'mon guys, you are building airplanes, you should at least be able to figure out how to change the "To:" field of your email message for this type of replies. I'm sure many feel this was but were not comfortable publically so. The problem is that if something is not said, the behavior and "poor form" would continue. So thanks Michael for raising the "list etiquette" issue again. It helps to keep the signal to noise ratio of this list high.

Sorry to have upset anyone. I thought it was kind of neat when we were chasing the countersink around.... But, point taken. guys, unless you're commenting on something about the part, which you think the rest of us might want to know, like Tim's comments, please respond directly to me. I feel like a kid who got his hand slapped... And no, I'm certainly not going to set up a web page. The idea was to provide parts to as many builders as posible for a price all could afford. It's enough work already.

Don,

I think you mis-understood me (us?). The reply was NOT directed to you, but to the many replies that should have been sent to you ONLY, that were sent to the entire list. I think it is great when you or anyone else offers products or services to the RV community but if someone wants to take advantage of those offers, the rest of us don't need to know it.

Don't feel bad Don, it's just a general etiquette thing on
the behalf of the other responders. My suggestion would be
to always just request that

"Please send an email to xyz(at)yourdomain.com and DO NOT
reply to the list, or reply-all"

I know, it's tough, because I've had the same thing happen
tons of times where you request offline responses but people
just reply to the address without thinking. It's not your
fault, it's just something that people have to try to remember.
And, as William said, not such a big deal when one new
flying RV-10 announcement can generate 15 public replies,
but you just don't want every product announcement to
generate 15 "I'll take one's" that go to the general list.
I find it amazing that even on the VAF site, where it's web
forums, people STILL post those "I'll take one" responses...
when really they should contact the sender only.

Like I said, it's nice that we have multiple suppliers and
multiple design choices with some of these parts, so
nobody wants to stop you from getting them out. We could
use more innovation from people like you. They just want
to see orders requested in a different way than a long
thread generating multiple emails. I posted this response
"do not archive" but as part of the thread, in hopes
that it at least gets people thinking before they do the
same. I'm sure that the Axle extension business will be
continuing good business. At the time when I did the first
group order, there were over 160 pairs that went out, if
I remember right. As far as I'm concerned, this is one
of those parts GUARANTEED to cause problems if you build
it stock....just like people who use the old stainless
spacers on the front axle. If only someone (maybe you're
up for it??) came up with a good retrofit kit that included
anti-rotation stop screws such as this photo I grabbed
off the VAF forum a long time ago:
http://www.myrv10.com/tips/maintenance/NoseWheel/2005087365224441271_rs.jpg
Now THAT is a parts kit that I think would also be a "must buy".

My writeup on that problem is here:
http://www.myrv10.com/N104CD/maintenance/20060809/index.html

Good luck and folks, just email Don directly if you want
his extensions. If you're a newer builder who's completely
uninformed as to the problems with the original extensions,
here's my old write-up:
http://www.myrv10.com/N104CD/upgrades/20070118/index.html

What would be REALLY interesting is to see what Van's reply
would be, if a couple of people who had the standard ones
break called up and said "Have you ever seen this problem
before?" I'd put a couple bucks on the bet that they'd say
"No, we've never heard of that problem." Smile Too bad in the
field, these things have been failing quite often...probably
due to the RV-10 using larger fairings than they were used to.

You didn’t upset anyone and you shouldn’t feel like a kid who got his hand slapped, unless you are a kid who got his hand slapped. ;P Certainly isn’t your doing.

Anyway, it’s up to everyone to remember that there is a certain level of etiquette even in something as impersonal as email.  Everyone forgets to do things like trimming posts, changing subject lines, and adding “do not archive” to things like “me too” from time to time and it’s not a big deal normally. I only chime in when it gets excessive, and you’ve been popping parts out so fast there has been no die down in between. I personally have no interest in how you go about your business but, as with other vendors, all most of us ask is you make an attempt to encourage people to contact you directly so this doesn’t turn into a classifieds forum and we keep a high level of building communications.

Feel free to keep up the parts creations and posting new stuff here and as Tim said, tackle the nose wheel problem if you want something that will generate a couple hundred “I’ll take one” emails.

Michael

Oops, the inconsiderate dude was me... I don't use email, but browse the forum online as I find it much easier to follow.
To my defense though i kind of though this was an accepted practice as I've seen it happen with some other things offered in the last few weeks.

I apologize to all those inconvenienced and bothered by my "me too" message.

Tim & Don C

What I would like to see is a cap and shaft arrangement similar to the Cessna 150 front axle. The two caps take the place of the aluminum spacers we use but fit over the shaft end and are captured by the axle bolt. Bearing pre-load is set by using different thickness spacers.

A retro fit kit would consist of a shorter than stock shaft C two end caps and some spacers.
