Gents,



Purchased an MGL E-3 gauge for EGT purposes but is has the capability to add just about every engine indication on the CJ



I've looked closely at the electrical schematics and had a volt/ohm meter on every connection between the probes and gauge but for the life of me, I can't figure out how the "trons" are flowing. The pressure input as well as oil temp to the gauge is a single wire input with a common ground. EGT's and CHT's are straight forward two wire connections. I'm sure it must be possible to use the current oil temp sender and oil pressure sender but I'm not sure how.



I've attached the file for the unit if anyone is really bored.

The original CJ oil temp is a thermocouple type gage the E-3 uses a 

resistance sensor (resistance varies with temp), like Cessna's etc, it is a 

single wire with the return being the engine case.  The CJ pressure sensor 

is also a two wire sensor then E-3 is looking for a variable resistance 

sensor.  Those can be found on cars and again Cessna's.

Thanks for the reply Frank. I did notice that MGL makes an insert probe which can be placed inside of a hollowed out CJ temp probe. As for the oil pressure sender, I'd lack the motivation to re-do the fittings, lines and /or hoses to support the standard thread on an auto/cessna sender.



Out of curiosity, how does the thermocouple sender work as opposed to the 

resistance style sensor.

The thermocouple sender uses the junction of two dissimilar metals to 

generate a voltage based on temperature, the voltage is quite small usually 

in the milivolt range.  The resistance style sensor varies the resistance 

based on temperature.  The gauge system usually supplies a constant voltage 

to the resistor and as the resistance changes the current flow in the system 

changes.

Frank, I have not delved into the Russian thermocouple designs at all.

Do you know whether they are using the any of the standard wiring for

their designs, such as: 



KX - Chromel/Alumel

TX - Copper/Constantan

JX - Iron/Constantan

SX - Copper/Alloy II

EX - Chromel/Constantan

BX - PCLW 630/Copper

NX - Nicrosil/Nisil

My guess would be  KX - Chromel/Alumel since that was pretty much the

standard back in the day, and most everything else I have seen in the

YAK/CJ designs was pretty much standard U.S. way of doing things back in

the late 50's to the mid 60's or so.  Would be nice to know, but....  Oh

well.
