Hi Thom,



        You're right, most of the production had moved down there in the 

early '70's, but he still maintained his Napoleon ops into the latter '70's. 

Some aircraft were still built here, plus repairs and such were done.  Prior 

to the 'plywood' takeoff technique, the customers needing floats mounted 

would fly their Maule into Napoleon, the gear and wings were removed, and 

the plane was trucked over to Maule's house on Wolf Lake.  The floats were - 

floated! - and the airplane was lowered on from a small crane or A-frame and 

reassembled.  Lots of labor for non-amphibious floats!

        BD made his 'real' money with the Maule tailwheel through his 

Mechanical Products Co.

        The old logo of a Maule coming out of the hangar door flying was 

from a picture taken at Napoleon.  Similar to the takeoff he did over you! 

There was a movie with Burt Reynolds where they land one in a city street, I 

don't recall the name.  Smokey II?  Also, the 'Southern Aviator' did a nice 

article on son Ray and his wife Rautgunde a couple years ago.



        Oh, and it's BD.

Ed/Gang:



Some years ago, on a flight in the MKIII to OSH, got into some typical 

cruddy weather up around the Tennessee/Alabama state line.  Got to the 

point I found myself scud running, following valleys through the low 

mountains to maintain a reasonable ceiling.  I was not alone out 

there.  A Maule was also trying to find a place to weather the storm. 

I heard the Maule talking to the FBO in Fayetteville, TN.  I was also 

heading that way.  The Maule landed just ahead of me at Fayetteville, 

in a frog strangling down pour.  When I finally got into the FBO I met 

Ray and his wife.  We spent the afternoon together at Fayetteville, 

including a good country lunch in town.  Real nice down home folks. 

After that day I always make it a point to go by and speak to them at 

Lakeland and OSH.

Hi John,



        Your and Rev. Pike's stories help on this slow day.  (Sorry Kolbers, 

another story...)



        I and my wife had gotten in a flight one late-summer day in a 

Cherokee 180 at Ray's flight school here in Michigan.  Was awakened about 

3:00 A.M. by the phone, and Ray hollering, "What'd you do to my airplane?" 

When I woke up more, I realized his 180 had been in an accident.  I was the 

last one on the sign-out book, so fingers were quickly pointed at me.  The 

plane had been taken out later that night, flown to nearby Brooklyn's grass 

field and had an encounter with some power lines.  Brooklyn's power was 

knocked out, and the Piper staggered home somehow with the stabilator nearly 

wrenched off.  A testament to the design if ever there was one.  Still had 

the wires wrapped around the tail after landing.  They surmised someone, 

possibly tipsy, had 'borrowed' it.  My bacon was saved when Rautgunde 

remembered seeing us leave and waved from the window of the German 

restaurant they owned on the field.

        They also hosted awesome Oktoberfests on the airport, with tents and 

"Oompah' bands, but those are some more stories!  You're right, John, they 

are great folks.

You are correct, sir. It was BD, not BJ. I was thinking it was BD but when I said that outloud it brought memories of Jim Bede, another totally different aviation inventor and decided it was not BD but BJ. At any rate, BD was an amazing man. As so many of the pioneers in our great flying pastime, he was one of those down-to-earth guys that loved aviation with a passion and built a good business around it. A lot of that still around, such as  Homer who I've not yet had the pleasure of meeting but intend to this year if he decides to welcome us again. Couldn't make it last year but will this year if he lets us.
