At the AOPA convention I found that Champion now makes a spark plug for the M14P engine. It is an Iridium Fine Wire Plug Part Number RVL38S 14 MM with the barrel using a metric thread, drops right into the M14P or CJ engine. Not cheap but should last the life of the engine.

Save your money and do a auto plug conversion. On the M-14 it's the wires that are no good in most cases not the plugs. Then you can use $2 plugs and throw them away. Your engine will run better also.

We converted our 52 to this system. It was the best money I ever spent. The difference in starting, performance and idle smoothness was very noticeable. Thanks to Dennis.

Bill,
It's $423.00. Includes shipping and insurance and everything you need to accomplish the conversion. Here's the link to the conversion kit info. http://www.yak-52.com/plug_conversion.htm You can also download the installation instructions from this page if you want to read them ahead of time. Kits are in stock.

I have converted my YAK-50 to this system and recorded the following
immediately after the conversion:
1. Idle became perfectly smooth where before it loped quite a bit.
2. Idle RPM with no other adjustments, increased by 4 percent.
3. Mag Drop DECREASED by just short of 2 percent on either MAG.
Downside:
Radio ignition noise did in fact increase by a very very small amount.
Before the conversion I had noise so low it was difficult to measure.
Now when receiving a very weak signal I can hear the plugs firing. This
noise in no way decreases overall radio performance.
I have to date worked with this modification on a YAK-50, a YAK-52, a
Sukhoi 26, and two Sukhoi 31's and one Sukhoi 29. Every Suke had the PF
engine. Results were close to identical with every one modified.
Cleaning plugs is a thing of the past. You just buy new ones at about
1/20th of the cost (+/-).

I had the same positive experience on my Yak 50. More noise problems though,
but that vanished after replacing the original Russian radio by a decent
Becker.

Dennis, I read your web site description, and I would offer one
suggestion.
For anyone contemplating performing this mod, go to Sears, or Snap-On,
or any good tool dealer and purchase an 11 MM socket with a ball adapter
rear. Sockets with a ball type swivel can be hard to find without
purchasing a complete impact tool kit, which is kind of expensive (but
in my mind worth it). An alternative is a 11 meter short socket with a
standard swivel joint built in.
A standard 11mm socket with an external swivel adapter snapped on won't
get it. You need a socket with either a ball or swivel mounted right to
it, as in a "single tool".
It CAN BE DONE without this tool, as described in the web page. However
if you HAVE this tool when you go to remove one or two of those 11 mm
nuts, you will be a much happier camper.
Bill... In your case, you don't need one. Follow the instructions
exactly.

I agree 100% Mark. The absolute best way to remove the 11 mm nuts holding the ring is with a swivel socket (as it's called). The only reason I didn't want to put that specifically in the instructions is I didn't want folks to think they'd have to purchase special tools to do the job. I felt that could potentially be discouraging. On the other hand, if someone is a tool nut like I am, having a set of 1/4 drive metric swivel sockets is a blessing. Again, your point is well taken.
FWIW, whenever I do an installation I absolutely MUST have the 11 mm swivel socket. It saves time and makes the job easier.

It took me 4 hours to remove the old harness and 4 hours to install the new harness (taking my time) in a hot Americas, Ga. field. Once the old harness starts breaking down, you might as well get rid of it. No amount of changing plugs nor fancy ones will cure that problem.

Dennis,
I am operating just off memory right now but about 2 years ago I think I had a conversation with a gent from AU about a problem with these same 11mm nuts needing to be checked every 100 hours or so for tightness, this to prevent the loss of the blower seal, which if I recall is what happened to him. He indicated that there was a card on this item in the M14P maintenance info. You M14P types would know better, perhaps Jill, George Coy, or some of you other 360 hp sages might shed some light on the question. Are you possibly courting a problem if these nuts are not returned to their proper torque values?
Always Yakin,
Doug

Doug,
The 11 mm nuts use the tabs on the ring as flat washers. There is or should be a lock washer behind the nut. I supply SS flat washers to replace the tab from the ring. After removing the ring, the customer is suppose to install the new SS flat washer, lock washer and 11 mm nut.
What I have found while installing the kit is, some of these 11 mm nuts are not very tight to begin with. While I'm at it and because the ring is no longer a hindrance to getting at these 11 mm nuts around the supercharger case, I go around and tighten all of them. Takes only a couple of minutes to do it.
