Hi Tim,
First the answers:
No, no and no
Followed by my thoughts:
My experience with the D180 was that it was a nice thing to have. Can't think of anything bad about the display or all the functions it had. It broke down after 3 hours of test flights, and lucky enough while on the ground. The repair and the transport took 3 weeks and 120 € for my part of the transport. Later i became a Dynon betatester, ands i really appreciate the thouroughness of their testing.
You have to realise though, that one disadvantage of such a system is to have all eggs in one basket. At one time, accidently ending up in cloud between mountains, it raised my heartbeat thinking of that.
Adding an autopilot worsens the odds.
The Dynon autopilot does not have any trim indication. You could be flying severely out of trim without noticing before you or the autopilot switches itself off. The Europa has a very powerfull trim and the combination is an accident in the making. While it is an experimental airplane, making the experimental part as small as possible does never hurt. Still, yes i would install the Dynon autopilot, but would wait a couple of years before i would. I would first have a backup for at least the horizon.

Jos Okhuijsen

"I would first have a backup for at least the horizon." -agree wholeheartedly
Especially since the Dynon _attitude_ solution is depedendent upon _air data_ (!) .... a scary thought for me at least - and especially when using it to drive an autopilot. Other glass does not depend on air data, and some not GPS either (Grand Rapids for example).
Cheers,
Pete

Hi all,
I fly my Europa IFR in actual IMC condtions a fair bit, although I try
to plan my flights where the actual approach generally means I break
through the cloud layer and I land under VFR conditions. As you can
imagine it doesn't always turn out that way.
I have designed my panel to accommodate this flight profile as best as
I could, at least for the amount of money I was prepared to invest.
I have created several levels of redundancy. I have a Digitrack auto
pilot which is completely stand alone, on a redundant electrical buss.
I have done the same for the GRT glass panel, and it is backed up with
a separate ASI, Altimeter, DG and Artificial Horizon, again on on a
redundant electrical buss.
So, I guess I taking long winded way of saying, having the auto pilot
tightly coupled to the Glass Panel like Dynon has done is okay, but
you have to appreciate your potential failure modes and fly your
mission profile against the risk level you are prepared to accept.
Regards, Paul

Hi Tim,
So happy that i can correct my own mistake before some else points it out: The Dynon autopilot has trim sensing and a trim indicator will pop up if an adjustable threshold has been reached. And yes, it has features not found elsewhere, for a price lower then anything close. Everything feasible is adjustable on screen. And adjusting is needed but not too difficult.
