Hi Patrick,

In my experience, if you tighten the axle nut too much the wheel
won't turn easily. If it is too loose the wheel won't spin true,
i.e. it will wobble.

I tightened mine to the point that the wheel binds and then back off
on the nut until the wheel almost spins freely. Spinning it by hand
feels just like a car wheel when the car is jacked up.

How tight do I need to tighten the castle nuts on the axle of my

Should the castle nuts be tight enough so that the bearing housings
are pressed (by the 6G1-4 spacers) against the wheel hard enough so
the bearing housings (and spacers) do not rotate with the wheel?

6-G-1 says, "SEALED TAPERED ROLLER BEARINGS CAN BE PRELOAD WHEN
TIGHTENING AXLE NUT".

What does that mean...? The bearings that came with my kit are
tapered bearings, but they are not sealed (I had to pack them with grease).

Is there a torque value someplace that I missed...?

Thanks,

- Pat

Patrick/Paul,

I initially tightened my nose wheel bearing just I do on a car. This is to pre-load it, and then back off just a touch to that sweet spot between too-tight and too-loose. After I started flying, I noticed grease being flung out of the bearing. Remember, the bearing has the seal integral to it. I talked to my Tech Counselor and he told me not to treat it like I would a car and tighten it up just a bit to get more sealing action out of it. Like he said, the nose wheel is not meant to drive coast-to-coast or see the heat like a car does. After re-packing the bearings with grease, I ended up tightening the nut one castleation and have not had any issues since.

Good luck,

Sounds good. Thanks for the sanity check.
