My Skymap 111C is telling me that it needs a new battery. I have done an internet search and discovered that it is possible to DIY. Anyone done this and if so which battery and what is the procedure?

Hi Richard
Just had the same problem. The battery is:
'The battery is a wire ended 3.7 volt Lithium Thynol Chloride AA cell.
The RS part number is 185-5659. Current cost is £4.80.
A friend of mine did the job as a favour as the 'official' price is apparently exorbitant. Couldn't really ask him again.
I'll see him this weekend and ask him for the replacement details.
Cheers
Rick

The official price was £125 plus VAT "plus anything else
that needed replacing !"
I compromised and paid them £25 + VAT for the battery, but
was disgusted to find that the battery was a standard one
that was about a fiver. I did do the changeover myself -
but it was a bit fiddly !
I have sent Richard the (12 pages) of official instructions.

Richard,
It is not very difficult to DIY the battery. I did Bob Harrison’s Skymap 3C for him with no great drama. The battery is a Saft 3.6V Lithium one with axial wires - it is soldered in. Bob got 2 of the batteries from RS ( see http://uk.rs-online.com/web/search/searchBrowseAction.html?method=getProduct&R=4364796#header ). The procedure is in the attached documents.
If you are not comfortable doing the job, send it to me with a battery, and I will change it for you.
Regards,
Mike.

I did one on the Skymap III (the panel mount version) - was a dead easy job. If its the same battery type (like an AA battery with a wire welded on each end). Its difficult to get to the underside of the PCB where the battery is mounted so to save dismantling the unit, this is the procedure I used (and would again).
1) Note the polarity of the old battery (mark the + on the PCB with an indelible pen)
2) Cut the old battery out leaving plenty of the wire left in the board.
3) Put your soldering iron on the wire at the point where the wire goes through the board and the pad on the board.
4) When the solder melts, use small pliers to remove the wire from the board.
5) Heat the pad again and use a solder sucker to clean out the solder from the hole.
6) Repeat for the other wire.
7) Form the wires for the new battery and pass them through the holes in the PCB. (cut them if necessary).
Solder the new battery in from the top of the board (the solder will run through the plating between the top and bottom of the board.
New battery should be available from Maplin - if not, I got mine from Farnell - they're mainly trade but the do sell online to the public.
If you fancy a flight to Rochester, I'd be happy to do the mod for you if you're not happy about soldering inside the unit.

Hi! Richard,
Some considerable time ago I had set of battery replacement instructions
and had finished up with a spare battery.
The battery is no longer where I put it (but probably dated somewhat)and the
instructions went down with my computer.
However I'm pretty sure I e-mailed them to someone on the forum so an appeal
may flush the chap out if he reads this message!
Mike Parkin kindly did mine and found it quite easy, the electronics are in
layers and the damn battery is in the lower layer and soldered into place.
I think the biggest pitfall is to ensure the layer spacer washers are put
back the same way up since one edge is chamfered.
Mike just may have a copy of my instructions. I had two batteries since I
ordered a replacement from RS supplies (or my Electrical Contractor
neighbour did !) and I ordered one from Honeywell but it was expensive. You
could try 'phoning the Honeywell technician(on 01256 722217) before office
opening time and ask him if he could either send you or Fax you a copy of
them. If you get them I could do with a copy if you would oblige.
Of course the damn thing will loose all your configured routes and way
points. Mine packed up on a journey somewhere but when you power it up in
the aircraft it will still work but you have to configure it as you go so to
speak. It sounds that you are lucky since it gives you say 50 hours notice
but that's not time in use it's actual clock time and it's ticking when the
thing isn't in use ! Now how you change the battery without loosing your way
points unless you solder the new battery in place before snipping the
original wires I'm not sure. Mine was BLXED anyway so the question didn't
arise !

Thanks Guys. With your help I have now dismantled the unit and identified / ordered a new battery. Shouldn’t be a problem to fit it.
Skyforce quoted me £75 to do the job. The battery was £4.80.
Cheers.
Richard.

Hi Richard,A little word of warning - do it carefully. Mine was done by a friend of mine, quite an electronics expert allegedly, but he managed to damage the unit and it had to back to Skyforce anyway,
All the best, Paddy
