My KF-IV, 1991 vintage has the fuel pickups at the aft end of the tank. Didn't Skystar have a mod to move the pickups forward to eliminate fuel unporting during descent?
Was this a good idea and should I modify my tanks?

My plane has a header tank that will take care of the engines needs for around 20 min.

So's mine....I figure 15 minutes to be safe, though....in fact while
descending into my flight instructors' place yesterday the low fuel
came on, and I pointed the nose level, banked to the left a bit, did
a little circle to line up with the runway, and the light went off,
telling me I had a t least 15 minutes left. I put in 10 gallons and
went home. I knew I was getting low, but kept it purposely low to
enable lifting the tail during the recent ski cable rigging
procedure, and was having so much fun with the skis I just plain
forgot to fuel up. I seem to be reporting a lot of these "low fuel
antics" but I maintain that knowing how to get out of the predicament
is first and foremost. Secondary is scolding myself for doing it
again and again. : (

I have 27.5 usable on my fox. 13-13-1.5 header. I have completed a cross country at a comfortable cruise (5000rpm rotax 912) I flew that plane for 6 hrs strait from Northern Penn. to North Carolina. I had 9 gallons of fuel when I touched down. I was amazed with the fuel burn at a slower cruise rpm. I still get a laugh when I see "The only time I don't want my tanks full is when i'm on fire". Every time I launch my plane, my tanks are full. It also seems to handle the bumps in midday flying better being a little heavy. Also less chance of picking up moisture when you keep you tanks full. I am in the process of building a speedster with a 912 and was wondering what cruise speed I can expect at different rpms. I'll be installing a IFA Ivo so I will be able to play with the pitch.

Clem,
My first Mod IV has pick-ups as you describe and my new build will have the
same. I flew often on cross countrys with the guys and sometimes solo and
never felt the need to change. I did have the light come on once after a
non stop from the factory area in Idaho to home in California. It happened
on the long 400 fpm descent from the crest of the Sierras to my home in the
foothills, a descent of about 30 minutes. I knew I had at least six
gallons - quite accurate markings on the sight gauges - so leveling for a
while to refill the header was no problem. With no boss where at the new
location, drilling and tapping at the location, mess clean-up and resin
bonding issues, for me it would not be worth the effort.

I am going to add a little to Lowell's reply. I have Williams low fuel warning in my aircraft also. I had the light go on a number of times when letting down. It does get your attention. What I do is pick the nose up C do a high wing up and let the header fill. The test I did over Half Moon Bay airport about 8 months ago went like this. I climbed over the airport to 3500 feet. Shut off fuel to both tanks C had power setting at 24 inches Manifold Pressure C 5100 RPM's. Engine shut down and prop stopped 21 minutesand 40 seconds later. A 912 ULS will not air start C so fuel went back on and engine started in about 4 or 5 seconds with starter.
Clint C lots of time with 912 ULS.

I wouldn't do it unless the tanks had a significant sump. I don't find it a problem to re-fill the header every now and then on descent. Besides, it's the only way to check that my low-fuel light is working. (Too lazy to put in a test circuit.)
