I have a few more pictures of my installation. One of the pictures shows the fairings which I have put on with a couple of Clecos. I will order enamel tomorrow so I can complete this part of the project. 

  I was going to fly today but a front came through and it was too windy, maybe tomorrow.

My aircraft is not Original Kitfox

Is called "Aguia" (eagle) model V. It is Brazilian Kit. More than 200 units sold.

It´s similar KIV with few model V modifications. (speed wing, and Model V estabilizator). Other parts is similar that Model IV.



Total weight is almost 1.400 lbs.

I used KIV W&B xls



Do you think that I have to use Kitfox Model V W&B xls?

I think you're going to be disappointed. The orange peel problem you're having with Polytone is caused from the relative humidity of the surrounding air being too high. From my experience, enamel will have the same problem, possibly worse. Also, unless it is some kind of polyurethane enamel you're likely to get cracking on it over fabric.



You've got to paint it inside a shop and use some kind of dehumidificaton. If it is warmer in the shop than it is outside, the relative humidity will be lower, presuming the shop has not added additional water to the air from wet floors.

I would follow whatever the kitmakers suggest as far as what W&B  

information to follow. Only they will know. They should at least  

advise to as to what the max gross weight should be, and where the  

forward most,  and where the rearward most extremes of the center of  

gravity should be located, and from what point (datum point) should  

these measurements be made.

Dick, and Fransisco,

The thing that strikes me the most when looking at your pictures is that the Bush Gear makes your airplanes look bigger.  I hate it when non airplane people look at my Kitfox and say, "it sure is Little".



You both know that now I have to save up for tw items...a big 4 stroke engine AND a Bush gear.

I have heard the same thing about my Fox. Just like cars. Bigger ain't

Heck, I like it even without the fairings (the kitfox brand style), and maybe I could save some more money without the sheet-metal and tabs. Hopefully Highwing can beat the grove gear upgrade by more than just $140 like Kitfox does though.



Guess we'll see.  I've tried to reach both Mark and Lloyd at Highwing LLC.  So, maybe I'll hear something soon.

Paul,

   The humidity is running about 40% and temp in the 60's.I have been able to paint fine with spray cans but cannot get close enough to the Arctic Blue color for my gear fairings so I have tried the Poly Tone.The enamel in the spray cans lays fine.

   I am just going to "bite the bullet" and order the Arctic Blue enamal from Spruce and get on with it.I will probably use the extra paint for some other thing I need to paint.

Deke C And C now I'm considering tearing off the brand new landing gear I installed and installing Lowell's bush landing gear C especially after Dick's report. These damn airplanes are worse than streetrods and motorcycles. Old cars are fun C motorcycles are crazy C and airplanes they are reserved for the insane!

Lowell is still on vacation, but I finally got a hold of Mark (at) Highwing LLC.  He thinks that the price for the basic type will be $1275.  If you want fairings like Dick has they will be extra.



I had kind of a bad connection with their cell phone, but from what I understand the gear are sent all ready to bolt on and you re-use your original axles and wheel assemblies.  So, it is just like the Kitfox version just $175 cheaper.  $315 cheaper than grove (plus the weight savings).

Do you think the farings increased the strength at all?  Just by eyeball this design doesn't look as strong for off runway use.



(Just the appearance is all.)



Have you seen the design used by this Highlander builder?  (I think it is a custom design)  Note the use of THREE down tubes.

I completed the gear installation with the fairings and will post two more photos.(the fairing from the top of the gear legs to the fuselage is my own build) This will be my last as I don't want to bore you with this topic. As mentioned earlier,I am absolutely thrilled with this new gear and would never want to go back to the old one. The ground handling is fantastic!

  The completed fairing installation seems to have added my 3-4 mph speed loss back to my cruise speed. Keep in mind this is not a scientific analysis but is based totally on observed indicated airspeed. The fairings are thin .016 skins attached to the gear legs to "clean up" the installation for aerodynamic purposes, they do not add any strength to the gear as one member had questioned.

   I really don't know who came up with the term "bush gear" for this style of gear. It looks like a cub gear with springs and this type of gear has been used on a lot of different aircraft. Is it as strong as a Highlander's? (my favorite aircraft) I doubt it. Is it as strong or stronger than the original. I don't know that either. Is it easier to maintain and look at? YOU BET!

Could you please post or send me a good photo or sketch of the detail of how the top cabane attaches to the fuselage at the gear lag?

 

 I am trying to fabricate a set of spring gear for my Avid, but keep getting derailed by the top attachment point.
