				Gary and Team Grumman folks,

I'm looking around to replace my Lightspeed 20s with something a little
newer. I like the looks of Mach 1 from Lightspeed. It's not an ANR set
but the amount of noise reduction it is credited with seems to be
comparable to what their ANR headsets achieve. I see that you can hook
it up to a cell phone if necessary, and probably an iPod as well. Has
anyone tried this headset? Like or dislike and why?

 Thanks.

Last year I saw some (I believe they were Lightspeed) headsets that had a
plug in for a cell phone. I think if I were going to set some new headsets, I'd
look at those. On a cheaper note ... I have some Peltor (I think they are
4001's) headsets that I like. They are the lightest ones I could find.

I bought one of the L1's last SnF.

 http://www.anrheadsets.com/productsL1.asp

Very nifty, especially since due to my dimensions, I tend to hit the top
of my headset on just about every plane (Including a Beech Sierra) -
this lets me have some room between my head and the top.

I like mine _a lot_. But check to see if your cell phone is supported.
I got it home, and hooked it up, and it didn't work. There's a note in
there that some manufacturers (Samsung's listed by name) won't work.

I've never tried ANR except in the display booths, so I can't give you a
comparison there. But I can tell you that I get less fatigued with the
l1 than I did with my DC's. About the only downside, other than my cell
phone, is that I *have* yanked them out spinning my head in a hurry
before. But it was only the once, and in the meantime, my head/neck,
 and gearbag are *much* happier.

The only problem now is that my girlfriend pouts that they should be
hers, since I didn't buy her anything else at SnF last year, and she
likes them better than the DCs.

I've used the Mach 1s for about 2 months now. Most of LightSpeed's headsets
now have the "cell phone/aux audio" jack.

 Observations:

 1) light and comfortable
 2) As quiet as my David Clark ANRs when the ear piece is securely in place
 3) Not as quiet when then work out of my ear a bit
 4) Mic boom a hair short and moves around a bit on me as the thing it's
attached to is only wedged in my ear with a little ring over the ear rather
than a massive thing clamped to my head
 5) Cell phone interface doesn't play nicely with my Motorola v551

I called LightSpeed about the shortcomings a few weeks back and their
excellent customer support said they'd research the cell phone compatibility
(though I've yet to hear back on this) and that they would have a revised
model with a slightly longer mic boom out in March/April. I believe I will
try to trade up for this as I think my head is such that the longer boom
will help. Lastly the rep really advocated the custom ear-pieces. Yep,
they're $120 or something but you get them once and apparently the whole
headset fits more securely and it keeps things much quieter.

Because they come a little loose from my ear (even with the yellow memory
foam ear plugs) I find them a little noisy in the Grumman. My A36 is
quieter and they work well there and generally I like them enough that I'm
going to try investing in the custom ear pieces and see where that gets me.
I don't think LightSpeed makes much money on the custom ear pieces (3rd
party vendor) so I don't think they were just trying to get my $120 when the
service rep strongly recommended this option. We'll see though.
