Hi:



I have decided to re work my canopy, that is to remove the canopy and get a new canopy frame.



It never fit in a manner I would like.. soooo  does any one have a

canopy frame for sale? or perhaps and old canopy, not being used ..



Trying to save some money...I know the work would be a pain....I even

try to talk to some people, south in Florida, i got the names from some

\one on the list... They did not know any thing on how to to do this,

or they did not want to do it, this guy tells me reluctanly,, well 

if we do it would be about $1,200,  exactly what he said...they are a

joke..  I understand, if some one does not want to do the jobe, that is

fine, just say so..or sorry we do not do that type of work etc...

That is the situation now..



any suggestions, ideas, appreciated

Robert,

 like many of the early QB RV-6's, the fit of my canopy was appauling.  Particularly at its leading edge.  Being disinclined to re-do any of that canopy work, I instead eventually 'fixed' the problem by laying up micro over the front turtledeck and on the front deck of the canopy frame.  Then just sand down until it looks like it fits better, and paint.  added a couple of pounds, but turned out OK and at least I didn't have to re-do the canopy (and potentially get the same problem all over again.

I had` the same problem with the frame on my QB6.  I did some "forming" and fiberglass buildup for the rest of the fit.  It was a lot of extra work for a poor fitting frame.  Never could get the rear skirt to fit nice and tight.  I suspect Van's would have fired the welding shop for this frame if they had to use it on one of their planes.  ??

I should clarify that I have the Slider, and the poor fiting I have

is mainly on the sides, the rear portion...I understand the only way I could fix this, is to remove everything and re-bend the frame..

which I do not want to even think about it..

The options some suggested, would be using fiber glass, to fill the spaces

, that would be fine, in my case the space is too large to do this,

almost 3/8..



I think if I could get a new frame, I would have to start all over..

remove everything and, put the plexi on the new frame no?\

Where can I get a frame, cheaper than, buying a new one, that is the question.

My RV-7 slider canopy was also too wide after I put the plexi on (Sikaflex).

I wrapped a cargo strap around it and cranked it down.  Then put it inside a

plywood box with some quartz shop-lights for heat, and monitored the

temperature with a thermometer stuck thru the top.  Left it for six hours,

turned the lights off and let it cool in the box with the strap in place.

Several iterations with progressively higher tension on the strap got it to

fit much better.  



It took a LOT of tension to get the plexi to move a little.  I finally quit

because I was afraid I'd find the yield point and kink the frame.

Bert, this is just a thought.  There is sort of  metal/glass skirt combination that might work for you.  Before you go to  all that trouble, you might try just slotting the rear skirt where it  bulges.  Cut a couple of slots (1/16 to 1/8 wide as needed) in the skirt  with a dremel tool running at an angle to match the bulge.  This will allow  you to bend individual pieces of the skirt down to match the profile of the  deck.  Should be able to adjust/bend the side skirts a little when the  pressure on the rear skirt is gone.  Close the canopy on a plastic sheet  and then lay up glass over the original skirt covering the "adjustment  slots".   Couple of layers of glass and I think you end up with a  nice looking skirt although it might pick up a pound or two of weight as you  can't just glass one part.  On the other hand, it will sound like the door  on a Cadillac when it shuts   and you will have zero stress on the  canopy itself.

  

 If that doesn't work, you aren't any worse off.  Not  at all sure you couldn't just cut off the back couple of inches of the skirt and  use the remaining part that is still riveted to the canopy as the base to bond  on a new glass skirt.

  

 If that doesn't work, then move on to new frame, refit  canopy, etc,...

Thanks fo the suggestion, it is a good one, however in my case, what

happens is the frame itself, is a  little too wide at the rear,

so the problem is to re bend it if that is possible now. yours look very good..

 If you can remove the plexiglass you may be able to cut a small section out on each side of the rear frame (enough to pull frame in to proper fit) Then find some tubing with the outside diameter slightly smaller than the inside diameter of the tubing frame and use it to splice the frame back together. Tack weld or possibly rivet back together.
