Did you see the video on Rotax-owner demonstrating and reviewing it?

No experience with it but we did discuss the Soft Start module at the Rotax course I just attended at Rotech in Vernon BC. They said it is not needed on the 914 compared to the 912S due to the lower compression ratio.

Hi Ron,
I have to own up to having a commercial interest in the SSM (I manufacture them for ConAir). As I already have more than enough work in the pipeline I wont try to convince you to buy one, but...
My old 912 (not an S) over the years has occasionally kicked back but with the SSM fitted it now starts with much less fuss (and doesn't kick back).
With the SSM it kinda lumbers into life in a lazy fashion and then as the SSM becomes inactive it perks up (I normally wait till the ignition has advanced before switching the second ignition on).
As for issues, you have to ensure that everything is right (battery state, ignition gap, carb balance, etc.) otherwise you're wasting your money fitting a SSM.
I don't know why but some engines just don't seem to need the SSM while others do. If you haven't experienced any problems yet I would wait and see. If you get kickbacks and everything else is looking right, perhaps you should fit one.
Cheers,
Mark

I have talked to some who have used them. They seem to like the way it starts. I also talked to Phil Lockwood at Sun and Fun and of course he recommended it. Even if you do not have the kick back problem, it should help on the wear and tear of your engine, sprag clutch and gear box.
I use an Odyssey 925 battery and with the high torque starter, the cranking amps just really spin the 912s. So it kind of plows through the rough start up that some engines have and that mine used to have.
I have an Aventura II and the battery is in the nose, far from then engine which is mounted as a pusher on top of the plane. I use #4 gauge starter cable because of the distance. This is also important.
