This is roughly the final product.... only difference will be totally radius-ed feet to fit around the pedals. It weighs a whopping 5 oz. I believe it should be adjustable enough to work on any of the RV's. I will try a few in the next few days. This can be accomplished by shortening the long rod and using a shorter spring. The spring is included. With the spring under some compression the length is 24". Seems to work perfect on my 10. Not sure of cost, but less than $50.

Looks interesting. I made a version of this but wasn't happy that it would push firmly enough on the rudder pedals to keep the rudder from moving. Using my tow bar pushing against the rudder pedals and the seat back seemed to pin the rudder much better. How firmly is your rudder held with your lock?? Sure looks nicer than the one I made!!!! larry

It's made of aluminum tubing.... the feet are dipped in a plastic bath.... and to use it as an aileron lock all you need is a short piece (6") of velcro.... wrap it around the gust lock and the stick. The spring loaded pin is there just so it can be stored as a shorter unit. You can put as many holes as you'd like, or just one that compresses the spring all the way.
Because I needed one quickly, I also made a pvc unit. It worked well, but was heavy, bulky, and uglier than sh%&.
I installed it today and then went to the back of the plane and shook the heck out of the rudder just to see if I could shake it loose.... no problem, it hung right in there.
The other advantage is that you will NEVER be able to take off and forget to remove it..... no matter how oblivious you may be.

I've had a rudder lock (ATP) for some while now and it works great. However, use caution when connecting it by a velcro strip to the stick for an aileron lock. In gentle or moderate winds/gusts it'll do okay, but if there are significant gusts you'll find your whole contraption on the floor having been loosened by the strong side force of the stick.

I'd stick with the seat belts to secure the ailerons. (Actually
it's good for the elevator too. I'm a little leery of the
spring loaded rudder gust locks because if it isn't a locked-in-place
setup, the wind could blow the gust lock compressed and then it could
pop out. I've known people parked in 40+ mph winds that
had problems in the past. So a solid locking method would be good.
My gust lock isn't pretty, but with an added strap from the fork
to the stick, I am able to neutralize the ailerons, provide
a solid lock to the rudders, and neutralize the elevator too.
It could be built prettier, but I really like the function.

No offense meant to whoever makes that lock, but attached is a picture of a -10 that had one of those locks on and had a visit from some fairly strong wind.

Jesse, thanks for the heads up. I will be back to the airplane today….headed back home. I will see if it held. I have one I made myself but it was a little harder to use. After comments from, I think Tim, I will go back to using my seatbelt to for the stick.

I emailed a picture of the rudder lock which has the advantage of putting no stress on any control linkages. For aileron and elevator I use the nylon GIZMO locks sold at OSH last year. The only drawback there is that the nylon RBF strip gets brittle in the sun; one strip broke but still useable.

One of the best solutions I have seen so far, IMHO, is a welded tube
on the front of each side of the Bogi Bar that will slide into a hole
on each of the pedals. With the arm extended and up against the back
of the seat, the seat belt can be used to hold it in place. Then you
can use the other seatbelt to hold the stick back (with the first
stick inside the middle triangle of the towbar) which will lock the
elevator and ailerons. The towbar is good to have with you when
traveling anyway, so the added weight is very small. If on a little
bit of a slope, it can push against the top of the pedals as a parking
break. If wind is expected, it can be on the bottom of the pedals as
a more secure gust lock.

I doubt seriously that one should use this as a substitute for chocks or a
real parking brake in the aircraft. Leaving a $100k + aircraft on an incline
with a tow bar pushed against the toe brakes seems a little chancy to me.

And here is another way to make a gust lock. I attach it after the stick is
tied back with the seat belts.

Of course not, but it would be too bad to have the plane rolling down
the hill while you get out to put the chock under it, or while you are
fueling your plane on a non-level ramp.
