Hi Phil.
If you are not planning on operating out of very short strips there are no
problems with the 912S/fixed pitch combo. You will have plenty of power, and you
will not have the cost, weight, and maintainance issues to worry about.
You can set the pitch to give optimum cruise performance, and your wife will
be able to bring lots more hair driers and things on trips.
Try it first. Go to variable pitch if you have to!
Cheers Bryan

You do that Phil, then come and compare it with mine before you contemplate
going VP. My XS has a Woodcomp CS/VP prop. I have no complaints about it
regarding value for money, and it does add to the performance. Having said that I
would not hurry to spend the money again. It is 20 pounds heavier, it requires
extra attention in flight and in maintenance, and it does not increase the
pleasure I get from flying. The Europa flies beautifully with fixed pitch
Add to that the fact that you will have yet another maintenance log to keep
up and more expense.
I will keep it on now that I have got it, because of the marginal benefits I
get on longer trips, and because people think it adds resale value (should I
ever have to sell). If it really broke though, I would not replace it!
Good luck Bryan

I think I'll jump in here. I agree with Bryan except I can only speak
from fixed pitch prop experience. I have a Tri-Gear with only 4 hours
on it. I can say I am really pleased! I have set the Warp Drive ground
adjustable to 21 degrees as I have 8000 feet of runway to play with. I
know it's still a bit cold but this bird is off the ground in just over
500 feet it's climbing at 65 to 70 kTS at 1100 FPM. After years of
152's and Cherokee's I have to say WOW! So far without wheel pants it
cruses at 115KTS at 3000 ft with only 4500 RPM's. Once I clean this
thing up and go with the recommended 5000 + RPM's I should see 125 to
130 KTS. I would like to have a new VP prop but for now I'm having too
much fun flying what I got. I just wish I had more time to enjoy it. So
for now I'll say.... Keep it light and simple and have fun flying.

Sounds as though you have a jewel of an aeroplane there. I only got about
100Knots at the same rpm with a Warp Drive set at similar pitch. I have
replaced it with an Arplast VP but not yet flown. Hope I have not wasted money!

Hi all,
Well, I'd like to offer a contrary opinion. I have an Airmaster and I think
its a game changer for take off performance. I have been in and out of
short grass strips at 5000' with MUW and it still gets off in a short
distance with greater than 1000 feet per minute climb. Its not all that
often that I run at MUW, but the take off and climb performance is
significantly different from solo in my aircraft.

Bryan, Last time I weighed my Woodcomp prop it was 9.8 kg including spinner
wiring & instruments. Can you really have had a fixed pitch system weighing
20 lbs (9.1kg) lighter? Regards, David

Hi David.
Well, there you go!
I cannot verify the weight difference from where I am at the moment, but I
do know that I had to move the battery back from the firewall to beneath the
luggage bay to offset the weight difference.
Cheers. Bryan

So that's another 3 lbs for battery cabling in addition to the controller
and its wiring for the VP. But then the pilot looses weight from the worry
and exercise of all that extra knob twiddling and log filling!
