Dear Listers,

I'm planning on trial mounting the wings on the RV-8 this weekend. I want to get the flaps and ailerons rigged as well as get the rear spar drilled. Once that's done, however, I want to take the wings back off for storage.

How hard is this going to be? Will I ever be able to get the bolts back out again after I get them in?

I've heard of people using hardware store bolts for trial fitting. Is this a good idea?

What's the minimum number of bolts I should put in to assure the wings will stay on unsupported and rigid enough to set the incidence?

Realistically, how hard (and how much damage) will taking the bolts back out be?

Thanks for any insight you can lend.

If the 8 is like the 9, try to fit the wing root fairing too.

The wings and bolts should attach and detach fairly easily, and hardware
store bolts are the way to go. The hardware store bolts will be slightly
smaller in diameter than the close fit bolts that will be used in final
assembly. Just make sure to grind 'em to a taper and they will go in very
easily. Drive them out with a smaller sized bolt facing the other way. No
damage should result.

On the -8 do you also set the sweep with the rear bolts? I probably had my
wings on and off a half dozen times before I removed enough material off the
rear spar stub to make everything work...

This is a big step. Take your time and it'll go well.

Kyle Boatright

I don't know how many bolts a -8 has, but out of 30 or so bolts in my -6, I
probably used a total of 10-12.

It's not a problem. "Normal" bolts are a tad bit undersized by
design. As another poster suggested, grind off the threads and put a
nice chamfer on the end of it and don't be afraid of lubrication. You
won't have any problems.

You'll do far more damage if you try to use the high dollar bolts that
come with your kit. Those will require some pretty good taps with a
dead blow hammer. Save those until the wings go on permanently.

For fitting the wings on my 6A, I cut the heads off from the hardware store
bolts and put a slight taper/chamfer on the cut end. The cut end went into
the hole leaving the threaded end available for with drawing the bolts using
a nut and washers. Worked well.

Matt, This is how I mounted the wings on my RV9a, but this is just the
basics. Go with the hardware store bolts, install two in the top and
bottom on each wing, one of your helps moving the wing on the outside edge
will make it fairly easy to slide the bolts into place. It will take a
little coaxing. I think it's important to have 3 helpers for the project.

There is a ton of information on the list and internet regarding mounting
wings. You will need two of your bolts ground down on the end to use as
starter pins. Good luck.

I want to thank everyone for the help on mounting the wings. The mounting went without a hitch today. The hardware store bolts just slipped right in with no problem. Highly recommend. I would say that they will be very useful in the initial alignment prior to inserting the close-tolerance bolts too.

Once the wings were on, I just had to put all the other stuff on the plane to get an idea of what it looked like. Awesome! I thought I'd share a couple of pictures... Yahoo!

Thanks again!

I can see how 80% of homebuilt planes don't get finished but when you get to this stage I bet NO one could pry that nice lookin plane from your hands now.... Keep building. The first flight in a craft you created is "PRICELESS"
