Dear Listers,
I installed the wing tips on the -8 last week and they came out perfect. I was really pleased and relieved. They each took about 8 hours including cutting the plastic lens.
That's the good news. The bad news is that the right tip at the trailing edge came out about 1/2" low. The left one is exactly the correct height. I measured this by making the short aileron push rod the exact length stated on the plans (27 5/8" I think it was) and then using that W-730 jig to center the bellcrank and I assume the aileron.
Installation of the left wing tip, which I did first, went really smoothly and I had little trouble fitting or aligning. The right one, however, really fought me and in my zest to make sure that the lap joint between the metal skin and the fiberglass was perfect, I kind of neglected to triple check the height of the trailing edge of the tip as it related to the aileron. I focused more on the alignment of length of the two and that they were correct.
Anyway, I was rigging the ailerons this week and connecting to the control stick and that's when I noticed that the right tip was drooping about 1/2" lower than the aileron. I tried removing the tip RIB and fusing around a bit, but this didn't help, and then I tried slitting the trailing edge of the tip. This allowed me to align the tip to the aileron at the inboard side of the tip, but it didn't allow me to raise the outboard edge of the tip (without a whole bunch of extra fiberglass work).
I'm not opposed to getting a new wing tip and just starting over again, but I was wondering if anyone else had this same trouble, i.e. left tip fit great, right tip didn't fit very well and was low at the trailing edge. I'm wondering if its just a problem with the fiberglass layup.
Now that all of the holes in the skin for the wing tip mounting are dimpled (I used #6 screws), fitting a new tip is going to be a real tough job because I won't be able to get the tip flat against the skin. Arg...
Any feedback would be appreciated.

Hi Matt
First C let me say your workmenship looks first rate. Secondly C I think you have run into a typical problem that most have faced at this point in the wing/tip build. Third C I think that the extra fiberglass work will do the trick. Those who don't like the FG stuff will probably consider a new tip...but ... this doesn't eliminate the potential of the new tip ending up in the sme position or worse....
Good luck in whatever choice you choose and please update us as to the solution.

Matt,
Your problem is common.
Your easiest fix is to slit the trailing edge of the tip and reglass into the correct position.
Slit, ductape to position, glass a couple places, remove ductape, glass the rest.
A new tip will not guarantee alignment, but the above technique will.

If you want your tips to work, re-glass and drill them up with the final rigging in place. No big deal, you have alum strips as a back-up for the nutplates... you'll be fine

It's been a looong time since I fit the tips, but IIRC, I used the
technique of holding the aileron in alignment with the jig that uses the
tooling holes in the outboard rib & aileron rib. Basically 3 screws in a
stick.
I too had good luck with the 1st tip & was badly misaligned with the 2nd
(overconfident). The tip was just rotated slightly in the end of the
wing, causing the trailing edge to be misaligned with the aileron. I was
able to just remove the clecos & re-fit the tip. Most of the holes moved
enough that redrilling wasn't a problem.
For what it's worth, you can use flush rivet sets in your hand squeezer
to solve your dimple problem. Call Van's & ask, but they've told others
that you can 'undimple' without doing damage to the skin.

Matt, I had a similar thing happen to my wing tip - right one also way back
when. What I did was to slip (along the seam) the trailing edge of the tip
back about a foot or so. I could then adjust the slit ends to match the
alignment I wanted and then reglassed the seam. Still good after 10+ years

Matt, Have you check it with your straight edge on the wing with the bell
crank jig in place? Mine is a 1/2 inch low on the right wing and 1/4 on the
left wing. I have not did the split yet on either wing tip. If you get
yours right, please take more pictures for future reference. Thanks for the
help and information guys.
