Should I use any kind of sealing on NPT threads in the fuel system (e.g. Locktite) or do these threads seal just by using the recommended torque?

Regards,
Svein

Hi Svein

I would recommend that you use liquid teflon pipe sealant against the tape.  The tape has the risk of small pieces of it splitting off and getting into your fuel system.

Svein - I've been using Loctite 577 (originally recommended to me by
Graham Singleton) but have yet to test its effectiveness as my fuel
system is still dry. I would NOT use any tape sealant as it's
impossible to ensure that small pieces are not set adrift inside the
fuel system - to lead to a bad day sometime later.

Incidentally what are the recommended torques for 1/8" & 1/4" NPT,
and where did you find a reference to them?

regards

Rowland

Many thanks for all replies. Seems that at fluid sealant will be the way to
go.

I only have max. allowed torque for the flow sensor into which the 1/4" NPT
AN fitting will go (25 ft.lbs.), not the recommended torque for the AN
fitting itself. Apologize for expressing myself differently.

Regards,
Svein

Hi Svein,

For any threaded fuel joints I recommend that you use Hylomar sealant which is a non-hardening product developed by Rolls Royce many years ago. It is used widely in many high performance applications. You can find information and suppliers with a Google search for "Hylomar" or "Permatex Hylomar". You need the 'Universal Blue' product. For clean up, you can use methylene chloride.

I do not recommend that you use Teflon tape. This product is forbidden in the petro-chemical industry after catastrophic plant failures have been traced back to small pieces of tape which have blocked critical control instrumentation orifices.
