My Classic Europa G-EIKY first flew in July 1997 and has over 840 hours. The port inboard aileron hinge is particularly worn and the other hinges are less so. I'm keen to avoid having to drill out and disbond the halves of each hinge which attaches to the aileron itself.
I've heard of a fix involving teflon sleeving and stainless steel pins and would like to learn more about this, or any other safe fixes.
Please send you responses to Jonathan Milbank jdmilbank(at)hotmail.com. Many thanks.

Jonathan,

I had the same problem with the outboard aileron hinges after only some 50
hours. A U.S. individual used to sell kits comprising Teflon sleeving and
stainless steel piano wire matching our hinges, to PREVENT wear but not to
make up for any already existing wear. I purchased some of his last stock a
year ago, and he told me that he was to discontinue this side-line business.
I am presently not at home but I'll try to find his name and number when I
get home over the week-end, in case you wish to contact him to see if he has
anything left over.

Instead of replacing the worn hinges, I fitted an additional hinge close to
the outer end of each aileron. I think the original position of the outer
hinge was too far from the end, this new hinge stiffened the aileron and
makes it feel "right". On all other hinges (including the trim tabs) I put
in Teflon sleeves and the new pins made from the piano wire. I was not able
to pull out the original pins from the rudder hinges, they were all glued to
one of the hinge halves during fitting of the hinges (before I learned how
to do it properly!).

Thanks Svein. I'll soon remove my wings, unscrew the ailerons and take a close look at how much wear there is. Regards. Jonathan

Hi all,

I have one problem with my ailerons hinges some years ago, they have too
much play.
Klaus Dietrich give me a solution to reduce the play:

You remove ailerons hinge and install your aileron on the table. You use
cyanoacrylate glue
On each hing extremity, use a small quantity (drop of glue) and during
two minutes you move the other hinge part continusly.
You repeat this on each hinge extremity.

The cyanoacrylate dry on the fixing part of the hinge and constitue a
small bearing around the hinge pin. After there is no play.
I may that 6 years ago with total satisfaction, no play.

Excuse my poor english
This solution is easy and cheap!

I made good some aileron hinges using the kit supplied by Gary Hall (at

the above address) earlier this year. The sleeves were easy to fit. This has
reduced the play and should now eliminate any further wear.

To Michel Auvray.

Thanks for your suggestion. I might give it a try after cleaning and inspecting my hinges.

Regards. Jonathan
