|
|
Hello,
I've recently picked up a 2002 classic IV fuselage and have a couple of
idiot questions.
1st: I notice the mounting tabs for the cowling and turtle-deck are much
smaller than the ones on my KF III and the 1/4 turn fasters that I have
won't fit. What hardware is used here? I intend to essentially scratch
make the finishing kit.
2nd: I see a few small horizontal tabs on each side on the upper tube
just aft of the wing in the turtle-deck area. What are these used for?
Thank you much,
Mark Napier

Mark,
These fasteners are Duez studs.
Winged 2600-3W on the turtle deck. 2600-8W flaperon horn bearing. 2600-4W top cowls.
Phillips head 26S8-3 for the bottom rear cowl and 26S8-4 bottom front cowel.
Receptacles are all 212-12N.
Lock washers are all 2600-LW

These tabs are where you mount a short piece of piano hinge to attach the lower half of the flaperon horn bearing material.

Hey Tom,
Thanks for the reply.
I do see the purpose of the large horizontal tab in between the two
vertical mounting tabs for the turtle deck. But there are also three
more small horizontal tabs forward of that position that are on the
upper tube that angles down behind the rear wing mount. They look like
you could mount a shelf or something there but that would block the view
through the turtle deck. They're also look too low to be part of the
turtle deck mounting unless an angle or something is mounted there.
Thanks again,
Mark Napier

Mark,
I looked at the pictures in my builder's log and see the tabs you are asking about. There is nothing attached to them in my pictures. I can't find any mention about them in the assembly manual either. I'll take a look next time I'm at the airport to make sure. I'll let you know if I did use those tabs to mount anything I've forgotten about.

I believe the 3 tabs are for floats but don't quote me on that. Two of them
hold the radiator on mine

I looked at my Classic 4 yesterday. The only thing I used the small horizontal tabs on the upper fuselage tubes directly behind the wing rear spar lugs for is to attach the pitot static line and antenna lead to them on the left side of the fuselage.
My kit came with the panel tank so the wing tank fuel lines run forward.
I have developed a theory that the purpose of the tabs in question is to attach fuel lines from wing tanks to a rear mounted header tank. They would work for that I think. Any body with a rear mounted header tank in a model 4 use them for that purpose?

Mark,
I don't know what the original reason for those tabs being placed there, but
I used them to secure the fuel line as it came from the wing tank to the
header tank. I drilled a hole, looped a nylon tie wrap down through the
hole with a cotter pin through the loop and then around the fuel line.
Other wise, no clue.
