I have been watching the development of the "upgrade" package on the Zenith blog. At this point, it appears that this upgrade will approximately equal and may exceed the effort that went into building the plane from a quick build kit the first time.

I had decided when I finished, it was the first and last time I would build an airplane. Now I have a unusable piece of sheet metal which requires that I build it again to make it fly.

I know many have built from the basic kit and put in much more time and some have built from plans and put in an enormous amount of time. When I had started this, I looked at the quick build kit and decided it was the limit of the time I thought was reasonable for me to put into this. Even at that, the time spent significantly exceeded initial estimates.

Anyone interested in a Jabiru 3300 engine with radios that happens to be attached to a large aluminum box?

How many others feel this way?

Hi Mark,

I feel you are overrating the difficulty of installing the upgrade
kit. It is a bit premature since the kit isn't even complete
yet. AMD has said (I think) they will do the installation for 80
hours of labor. Perhaps you would consider paying them to do it?

In any case, I might be delighted to buy a Jabiru engine if it is
new, and the radios you have might be interesting. What exactly do
you want to sell. Where is it all located.

I hope you decide to move forward, but if not perhaps there is a good
market for your stuff.

I feel the same way! After I pulled the last rivet I told myself I was done building airplane for the first and last time and popped a bottle to celebrate. Now Zenith wants me to undo what I have done to get to and fix the parts they built and they call it "upgrade". I get a cold chill through my spine every time I think about what needs to be done to make my plane airworthy.
One thing I learned after building my airplane is that I consistently underestimate the time it takes to complete a task and also not to believe the Zenith's estimated time required to build.

I believe I have under estimated the effort in doing this upgrade. I just looked at the latest postings. I must have missed it before (wishful thinking), this update requires completely removing the center spar section. As there are large numbers of wires and tubes (in my case I did not use any rubber hose, it is all metal) going through this member, all that must be removed also.

In addition, the ailerons must be opened up to install the additional ribs and weights.

Adding everything up, I am now quite sure the total effort exceeds what it took to go from the delivered quick build kit to a finished airframe.

After all this is done to an otherwise finished airframe, I will find it hard to believe it will ever go back together as well as it was originally.

Yes I am a pilot first who had this clearly crazy idea that building an aircraft was a reasonable thing to do.

Hi Mark,

Why don't you hire a mechanic to do the upgrades? I'll bet if you
check with the members of your local EAA chapter you will find
several candidates willing and able to do the job. Yes, it will cost
you, but if this is your first experience with unexpected costs
associated with airplane ownership my advice to you is to get used to it.

Paul,
Actually, having it done is a consideration. I have found one place who will do it but the logistics didn't work. There are local people who are capable but I would expect that unless they were doing more than one, the AMD estimate is extremely optimistic.

That does not rule it out, I just have to be careful. I know another who got an "estimate" on painting from a local mechanic who had not done that model before (not a real paint shop) and the job exploded. It grew to many times the original estimate.

Hi Mark,

If your plane is an E-AB then anybody can work on it. They don't
need an A&P license and you have already met the 51% rule. My EAA
chapter is loaded with retired guys who would love to have a project
to do. Some of them are both highly skilled and highly
experienced. Many would work for nothing, but as the owner it is up
to you to supervise and properly reward any workers even if the
reward is a few rides in you plane when it is all fixed up. Pizza
can go a long way too.

If you are not a member of an EAA chapter, then this is a good time
to fix that . . .

Good luck,

Paul
