|
|
Hi all,
I've spent the last month trying to stop the EA-81 in my 601 HDS
overheating. This has only occurred since the engine was rebuilt with 10
thou oversize pistons, new bearing etc.
I've now decided to fit an oil cooler to solve the problem and am hoping
to get some pointers on how to best do this. Could anyone with an oil
cooler on this engine aircraft combination (or a 610 XL or 650) please let
me know how and where they've mounted the oil radiator, naca dicts etc?
Photos would be excellent please.
I'd also like to know how to fit the oil cooler adaptor plate. The ones
I've seen on other aircraft are about 20 mm 93/4 inch) thick and fit
between the oil fliter and the engine. The stratos EA-8a has the oil
filter very close to the engine mount and uses a short Briggs And Stratten
oil filter to fit in the gap so I don't think the adaptor plate will fit
there.
Any advice appreciated.
Cheers,
Greg.

If I understand correctly, you didn't have a problem with overheating (oil ?) before the overhaul and now you do? I think there could well be a problem with the engine. Clearances too tight? Air in the cooling system?

Has the engine been thoroughly broken in? The problem may resolve itself when the rings finish wearing in. Otherwise, increasing the airflow around the oil pan may help. I have a baffle mounted to the top front of my engine to force more airflow down around the pan. If you need an oil cooler, you may also need to use a remote mounted filter. I don't know if such a thing is available for the EA-81.

Greg,
A friend, Kelly Meiste placed his oil cooler adapter where the filter
goes and then extended his lines to make the
now large filter a finned adaptation that works rather well. You could
place the conventional cooler on one side of the
lines and hide the filter elsewhere. See attached images.

I mounted a racing Oil Cooler on the right front just behind the cowling on
my 601HD. Our oil temps are in the 180- 90's We set up an adapter to the
original filter mount and ran lines to a remote filter assembly mounted on
the firewall. This works very well and doesn't add that much weight.
