AFTER SIX + YEARS OF BUILD TIME, I'VE BEEN FLYING MY RV-7A SINCE EARLY AUGUST.  FIRST FLIGHT WAS BY FRIEND AND MENTOR FRED STUCKLEN, OUT OF NORTHAMPTON AIRPORT (7B2), MASSACHUSETTS.  I HAVE THE GRT, EIS AND EFIS, SINGLE AHARS, DUAL SCREEN UNIT, WITH A GARMIN AVIONICS STACK AND A/P.  THE 63 HOURS ON THE AIRPLANE HAVE BEEN FREE OF ANY MAJOR ISSUES AND MOST OF THE MINOR ONES, E.G., THE CUSTOMARY HEAVY LEFT WING, HAVE BEEN RESOLVED.  THE ONE REMAINING ISSUE IS WITH THE FUEL GAUGES.  THE FUEL TOTALIZER WORKS FINE AND IS ACCURATE TO WITHIN A FRACTION OF A GALLON AFTER A 90 MINUTE FLIGHT, BUT THE INDIVIDUAL TANK GAUGES HAVE NEVER WORKED PROPERLY.  I INSTALLED THE VANS CAPACITIVE SENDING UNITS IN THE TANKS WITH PRINCETON CONVERTER UNITS.  THE GAUGES MAY OR MAY NOT SHOW FUEL AMOUNT FOR A FEW MINUTES AFTER REFUELING, WITH THE TANKS FULL, BUT ALWAYS DROP OFF LINE QUICKLY AND THEN SHOW NOTHING.  I'VE CALLED GRT FOR ADVICE AND, FOR A SHORT TIME, THOUGHT WE HAD SOLVED THE PROBLEM BY USING A DIFFERENT PROGRAMMING SEQUENCE FOR THE CONVERTER UNITS.  BUT - IT WAS NOT TO BE!   HAS ANYONE HAD SIMILAR PROBLEMS WITH THE CAPACITIVE FUEL GAUGE SYSTEM AND HOW DID YOU GET IT RESOLVED?  I'M AT THE POINT WHERE I'M SERIOUSLY CONSIDERING REMOVING THE TANKS AND INSTALLING FLOAT TYPE SENDING UNITS.

Hello Dan,

I had a similar issue with one tank which was quickly resolved. Review your calibration numbers and make sure each data point (fuel qty) is different and changes in the same direction from your starting fuel calibration qty to full tank. The capacitive value can be manually over-written in the calibration menu and slightly altering the value as directed by AFS corrected my faulty fuel reading...or at least that is the case with the AFS-2500 engine monitor. My capacitive fuel qty set-up from Van's with the Princeton converters is extremely accurate...would not consider alternatives.

Regards,

Bill
