My altimeter seems to be reading about 150ft. too high. I wondered if anyone who has upgraded to a glass panel may have their old steam driven one for sale? Please contact me off forum if so.

Hi Richard,

Most altimeters have a way of adjusting the link between the pressure setting and the altitude indication. This does not normally require any dismantling of the altimeter. What Make/type of altimeter do you have?

Hi! Richard……My heart took a beat faster until I realized you were asking for Altimeter and not DI !
I have a DI which is due for the chop to make room for my TruTrak Pictorial Pilot !
Should you know anyone needing a DI send them my way please.

Richard, You are actually required to keep a steam age altimeter & ASI if
you convert to glass so that won't be a source for you, but I would be
surprised if you cannot adjust it. My Gliding club has a machine for
checking altimeters at the time of C of A renewal and as I remember it they
were all expected to be adjustable. Regards, David

Richard,

Most analogue altimeters adjust in a similar way. Set the altimeter reading to your current altitude, at the side of the millibar setting knob you should see a small screw. Loosen the screw a couple of turns until you are able to pull out the adjusting knob (normally about 2 mm) set the current QNH, push the knob back in and re-secure the locking screw. The method is bit like pulling out the adjuster on your wrist watch to adjust the time.

Regards,

Mike

David. Ah. OK. Actually I went back to the offending object to see if
it was adjustable and discovered that in fact it was 2000 ft out, not
200!! Shows how long I have been out of the loop. Looks like I will have
to splash out on a new one.

Richard, If you are that far out it suggests to me that you have a problem
in the plumbing - something like a solitary bee nesting up the pitot, who
has sealed the other end up to stop draughts!? Regards, David

Richard,
Why not just reset the subscale. Details at:
http://www.falcongauge.com/PDFs/instructions/altimeteradjust.pdf
You don't have to take the instrument out of the panel for this.

Hi Richard,

I think this could be one of those cases of "you get what you pay for".
You may or may not be aware that Wultrad/Falcon equipment is Chinese.
Anyway, there is some discussion of altimeter problems at
http://groups.google.com/group/rec.aviation.homebuilt/browse_thread/thread/2b9ec87c6a82fb43
This is hearsay but I understand that maintenance shops in the US will
not touch these items. Another story is that ASI dial markings have been
individually custom painted to match the gauge calibration rather than
calibrating the gauge to match the markings.

Cheers, John

Regarding altimeter errors, I had an interresting experience last month:

I had removed my instrument panel module for working on my autopilot installation. As my altimeter (United) has been consistently showing a 2 to 2.5 millibars error for the last few years, I took this opportunity to remove it and take it to an instrument shop for repair. After overhaul I checked it was ok, then I install it back on the panel. The next day, I was surprised to discover that the altimeter was wrong about 4 millibars, worse than before the overhaul! I removed it again from the panel, and was ready to take it back to the instrument shop when I found that the indication was now correct. After some thinking I realized what happened: my instrument panel module is fitted with quick disconnect fittings for both the static and pitot lines. Those fittings have a shut-off valve. Therefore, when the panel is removed, the altimeter is not connected to the ambiant static pressure anymore, and a change in the atmospheric pressure will not be seen by the altimeter, but, due to the thermal expansion of the air trapped inside the line, any change of the temperature will!
Most Europas are fitted with those quick disconnect fittings at the port wing root. So when your fuselage is at home on the trailer, do not be fooled by the altimeter indication!

Richard,
Might be the reason of your problem. Please let us know.
Regards
Remi Guerner

Hi Remi.

No. I took the altimeter out of the panel and completely disconnected it and it is still showing 2000ft. at sea level. The message that John Wigney sent me pointed to a discussion site which explains that these altimeters are prone to failure. I have now got another one which I hope will be OK. Thanks for all the posts.
