Don't mean to offend anyone C BUT
Two observations about this door latch.
I think this latch is rediculous and to me it looks like someone is playing a joke.
Imagine us getting all huffy and even rushing out to do the installation.
As it is C many people have already built their doors. There were no hardpoints built into the door in that location. The latch arm looks like it could be used on a gate holding in an elephant C but the plate holding the latch is achored into the fiberglass with blind revets and no hardpoint. Admit it C why is there this disconnect in design?
Obviously C the idea is another visual clearification that the door is closed...I guess if this latch is engaged C the forward edge of the door would have to be closed. If it isn't the slipstream could grab the door and rip it off along with the latch arm C the plate and the blind rivets. This is another assumption and may not have been tested and can't C so it is speculation on Van's part as they can't possibly know how well every builders doors close even with this latch engaged.
Secondly C could they have at least rotated the piece of aluminum that hangs out the door. I haven't spent hundreds of hours trying to make my airframe look like my slick sailplane to put this piece of 4' X 8' plywood angled 90 degrees to the wind on my plane. Glad I thought of this a long time ago and put a hardpoint inside my door on the forward edge of the door. My pins even without the aluminum billets go 1/4- 3/8" beyond the aluminum frame(not just the fiberglass cabin top frame) and I added an addition 1/8" aluminum plate to the backside of the aluminum frame to account for hole wear over the years. Yes C I also have switches C my design C from Mc Master Carr.
I made my own safety devices and am I not the builder and isn't this an experimental aircraft. Save yourselve...jump off the cliff.

Just got the kit today and will not install. I lengthened the pins and may put the aluminum blocks to replace the nylon guides.I feel the pins twice before each departure. Once after doors are shut at the hangar and once before takeoff. I always shut both doors.

Maybe it would send a message if those of us that don't have the
finish kit tell them to delete the SB parts from our order and credit
us.

Now that I installed the flush door handles in rear part of the door and the unlock button is in the front I'd need a third hand to release the door latch in the middle of the door.
I guess I really have to rethink if my setup is still feasible with the new SB.
Not happy with the entire door locking mechanism

Michael,
I have been flying with the same door handle setup you have. I don't
have the SB kit yet, but I imagine the sequence to open the door will
be to push the forward unlock button and rotate the flush handle to
open. (two handed operation) At that point, the SB latch will still
be holding the door in the closed position, but the pins will be
retracted. Then you will release the SB latch and pull the door open.
Shouldn't be a three handed job. I am curious if it looks like the SB
latch is going to interfere with any of the internal flush handle
mechanism?

David,
You are correct. Opening the door is a 2 step sequence, but it does not require 3 hands. Rotating the handle allows the bottom of the door to move outward 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch. Lift the new latch about 3/4 inch to open the door fully. The new latch also makes a convenient pull point to bring the door completely in for closing. I had been thinking of adding a strap of some type, as others have done, but probably will not now.
I don't know how this will work out with other door handle systems, but the upper surface of the latch is 1/2 inch below the aft door pin rod and 11 1/2 inches aft of the stock door handle shaft.
