I am new to the list, and I have a question:  My Rotax 912 UL has 40 

hours on it, and the exhaust outlet is black, and a finger swipe inside 

the outlet comes out sooty black.  Is this normal?  My home field is at 

3600' and I regularly fly between 5500 and 9500.  Is the mixture too 

rich?  I have the 2.27:1 gear reduction and run 87 octane autogas.  

Mobil MX4T Synthetic motorcycle oil and an oil thermostat.  Temps all 

run very normal, engine performs well.  What do others see?

When you start up a 912 cold, the enricher (some call it a choke) must 

be on to get the fuel/air ratio rich enough to start the engine. This 

short period of time during cold start-up is sufficient time to coat 

the exhaust outlet with soot. It is recommended not to run the enricher 

any longer than necessary. Even on the coldest starts, you should be 

able to close the enricher within 30 seconds or so by adding throttle 

as you decrease enricher.



This does not necessarily mean that the carbs are not set up correctly 

but even if they are the soot is a normal consequence of correct 

starting procedure.

Thanks, that sounds right!  It runs rough with the enrichener, so I 

normally get it out as soon as possible.  Thanks!
