Has anyone ever had the problem of a dim faceplate? I'm not referring to
the C90 (which I know washes out easily) but to other Sony units from the
 time period.

I used to use an XR-C9100 which I put away in the closet in favour of a
CDX-C7850 some years ago... The faceplates were similar but not
interchageable (the C9100 FP would have worked with the C780 but the year
later they changed the FP slightly--the prior FPs would fit and control the
 HU but without display).

Anyway three things I noticed right away with the C7850 I got (used, on
 eBay) were:
 1. The FP was noticeably dimmer than the C9100's FP.
 2. The FP emitted a faint but stupid inverter noise/whine not present on
any similar HU from Sony I owned (XR-C900 and XR-C9100) well I'm sure there
was some but very very little.
 3. The tuner's volume was significantly lower for some unknown reason
(still haven't figured this one out though I don't use the tuner that much
 anyway).

Also I don't know if the display had been getting worse or what because
recently I was getting really annoyed not being able to read it in the sun
at all. I don't remember it being that bad until recently...

Physcically the FP from the C7850 I bought was never that great with some
wear on the left side near the volume/AMS... So recently I saw another used
FP for a C7850 on eBay and snatched it up.

When I got it, it had some strange dust inside the display and the window
was a bit scratched but otherwise better cond'n than the one I had. Opened
up the FP cleaned out the debris and waxed buffed up the window so the
 scratches were gone

Anyway once I put the FP on the HU, I was surprised that I immediately
noticed the display much brighter--much like the C9100 I used to use. The
inverter noise was still there though, and I actually think it is a very
slight bit louder than the other one, lol.

Has anyone encountered this before? Is there any cause to this? (Either
the dim display or the inverter noise.) I'm just wondering what in the FP
determines how bright it goes--perhaps the old one might be "fixed" somehow?

Well in any case I'm glad I have a brighter FP now
