If any of you folks attending All Red Star at Porterville feels the need for speed...well I have a contest proposal I'd like to see tried out so it can be replicated at other events. Basically it's a timed from a pass over the runway, out about 5 to 6 NM, around a "pylon" which is an easy to see road intersection where a "judge" can check for pylon cuts and then back to the airport to stop the clock.
Sounds simple enough but I have to tell you that some practice is required to get a good line around the pylon without eating up too much time and bleeding off a lot of energy. Holding a precise heading and altitude helps shave off seconds as well.
This isn't just for CJ's; Yaks, RV's and spammers could try this too. Each run will be over in 5 minutes so several airplanes could run the course during the late afternoon or early morning when other events aren't running and the bumps are smoother.
Let me know, off 'list, I have a proposed course, over flat land, free from towers, and a scenario on how this could work. If a fun-type contest is the result, we could replicate at other events and maybe even award "Speedy" patches to class winners??

Not fishing, just being realistic as there will never be a single meet given the wide distribution of our locations. I expect to run the same course as everyone else. It's not just side x side speed. Skill in sharp pilotage and pylon turning can shave seconds off a short 12NM course anyway.
This could be a fun thing that fills in some open holes in the schedule and any pilot can do it. Formation rating not required.
