Nicopress Sleeves-Control Rigging Question

Control rigging question here.  The standard supplied tin coated copper sleeves provided by zenith are marked part number S-11-004.  The ones available at spruce have a different part number alltogether.  Are the ones furnished by Zenith Mil spec?  Is there such a thing as a milspec nicopress since they were really originally designed for phone guy wires?



I am making some control cable ends and I want to make sure that I'm doing everything right, but I can't find too much literature on this.  I know the crimp procedure 1Middle, 2thimble side 3back side, and I know to use my go/ no go gauge for a size M, but I just want some reassurance.  Are the S-11-004 the same as what is available at spruce?  I just figure it only takes one cable slipping loose to really ruin your day.



I'm using the two bolt cheapo crimper available at spruce which works well but is slow.  I cut a couple crimps in half with a drem and it is nice to see that every thing is compact with no voids.



Is it typical to proof test cables  IF so to what pressure 7x19 is supposed to be good for 2300 #, do you test to 1/4?  I can't image that these control cables would ever actually hae more thann 150 pounds on them.

I bought the Spruce equivalent tin coated sleeves and they were the same parts as the ZAC supplied stuff.  Go for it.  I used the cheapo 2-bolt crimper also.

You might get more life from that crimper if you replace the washers with larger ones. Two per bolt. Hardened if you can find them. Keep the threads oiled up. 

I made cables for a sailboat. You could tow your car with these cables. 

There's an idea, make up a test cable and tow your car. You will get an idea of how strong your crimp is. The cable will probably break first.

t sounds like you have a good grasp of the basics. Go to AC 43.13-1B  Chapter 7 page 7-29 and perform the test as listed. Your instincts are  good, will the cable be stressed in normal use to anything near the  design limits, probably not but what is the up side to not performing  the work IAW acceptable data. Make sure to follow the safety precautions  listed in the AC, cables can be dangerous. If you don't have the AC you can download Chapter 7 or the whole thing from the FAA web site.

If you go to Lowe's they have a crimper that looks like a bolt cutter and you can do 3 crimps in about 2 min.

   they are by the chains and cable's in hardware and they cost like 24.00 but well worth it.
