Last I overheard, Stanley Cty (VUJ) was the cheap place for fuel. So
without verifying, I went there to fill up last night...$3.64. Ouch.
On a related note, I've started cruising at lower power settings, 21 MP/23
RPM instead of the 23/23 I've been using. Cooler CHTS, at least 1 Gal/Hr
less fuel and 6-7 Kts slower....

If you guys want to save some bucks on gas, why not use auto gas? Or at
least a autogas av gas blend?

No not stirring the pot.... if I were to stir the pot I would say something
to the effect of if you can afford a near 100 thousand dollar plane, why
worry about how much the gas costs? Kinda like the owner of a Porsche
taking his car to Walmart to get a oil change...... lol
Gas is gas and using good premium 93 Octane car gas is a alternative fuel
that will work just fine in most of our airplanes. I use it in my RV-4 with
no problems whatsoever. I save usually around a dollar per gallon over
Avgas. And for me, price of gas does make a big impact, I am a Walmart
shopper afterall.

Why use 93 Octane?
If your engine is certified for 80 Octane, like mine, regular unleaded
at 87 Octane will work just fine. If your engine is certified for 100
Octane, than you shouldn't be using mogas anyway.

I'll bite. I probably burn 10 gallons of hi-test mogas for every gallon of 100LL... the latest round of avgas price increases makes the $2.85 and up for 93 octane seem more bearable. Amazing how fast the American con sumer gets accustomed to higher prices.

because higher compression 160 hp engines want to have 91/96? That's my story and I'm stickin' to it.

I thought the minimum octane rating for these "high compression" engines
was 100, not 91/96. My mistake.

Darn it, that undermines my last reason for the 140 hp O-290-D2 I'm
installing my -9. Oh, there is still that low price thing for a O SMHO
Lycoming, can't forget that.

I was told by many people including the folks at the EAA that handle the
autogas STC for certified planes, that with my 0-320 160 HP engine I would
need at least 93 Octane autofuel or av gas. I ran 87 in it for a month or so
when I got it and at times I could hear some pinging so the 93 makes sence
to me. No pinging or other issues with the 93.
Bill, off topic but do you really think your bird will go that fast on that
engine and with that fuel burn? I have had 2 other planes with 0-290
engines and both burned between 6-7 gallons per hour at best. In my RV-4 I
am burning nearly 7 gallons per hour going 170 mph.

Ron,
All I know is what I've been told by another guy who has an O-290-D2
powered RV-9 (Tail wheel), like what I'm building. His empty weight is
998, and I suspect mine will be a bit higher.
Van's lists the cruise speed for this combination as 175 mph. From what
I keep hearing, Van's numbers are usually on the mark.
Also, the prop makes a big difference. Craig Catto cut one for me that
he suspects will get me to 180 top speed.
With all that background info, I sure am keeping my fingers crossed for
a 75% power 175 mph cruise. The GPH thing, well that may be a bit
optimistic but then again, I'll be burning regular unleaded in that 80
octane, low compression engine
