I resolved this problem. I can only guess, but upon blowing into the coolant tank I found that I could move air from my blowing into the system, and that came with some coolant movement....when I finished, the coolant level was no longer at the top of the input point, but seemed empty...it took a full liter to refill the system. There had been no leaks. I can only guess that somehow I had air 'trapped' in the system...the thing that fooled me was that the hose from the radiator was reasonably hot, so I assumed there was coolant being moved through the system...perhaps there was, but it wasn't enough. After adding the coolant the system appears fully normal. Prolonged running did not raise the CHT much past 150. thanks for your input.

That was good you got the air out. I know a guy who had air in his system, the coolant got so hot, some turned to steam and he blew a coolant hose in flight.
He decided to make an emergency landing. I hear if you throttle back enough, you can run the engine without coolant to a safe landing.

I've heard this too, but does anyone know by any chance for how long/what power setting/ if the engine is reusable afterwards?
Course, my procedure when the CHT's start going up for no reason in flight is to land ASAP, but I'm just curious about this in case I have to stretch the glide (and for how much it'll cost me if I and the plane survive the landing)...
Thanks,
LS

Lucien, all, See Line Maintenance Manual section 5-50-00 3.4) for limits and checks and Heavy Maintenance Manual 72-00-00 3.10 and 5.0 for hardness checking.

"Somewhere" I read that you could operate at 50% power with no coolant.

And the engine will never blow up due to no coolant...but you may warp the
heads. The bottom line is you can fly the plane to the nearest airport
without risking your skin or your airplane in an off field landing.
