From what you've written I gather the following: You have removed
the Hamilton compass from your plane and you are standing in your
front yard with it, trying to set it. That's how I read what you've
written...is this correct? If so, that might be the problem.

Thanks, Jim...keep going...you'll get there. It sure looked like a
daunting task early on, and I don't wanna think about how much fuel
it took to get there, but it was fun, and keeps on being fun. I gotta
think of another milestone to shoot for now. A friend asked me how
far I had probably flown, and I guessed at about 85-90,000 miles....3
 times around the world?

				Memorable moments....well, I wasn't a pilot until I got trained in
it, so I missed flying the first flight, or the next 40 hours, but I
sure gave 'er hell after that! Probably flying it to California from
Michigan, or being allowed to fly it into the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome
airstrip were a couple of good accomplishments. On the bad side of
things, finding a wheatfield in which to emergency land was
memorable, as well as....when out of fuel...spotting a nice strip of
grass and getting 'er whoa'd down on that strip, then discovering
that it was a little-used airport after all. Flying on skis up to
Oshkosh the first (and so far the only trip there on skis) time was
pretty neat, too...yeah, the spot landing at Oshkosh during
Airventure and the subsequent running out of fuel 20 feet off the
runway was exciting....not really out of fuel that time. The fuel had
just moved to where I wasn't getting it...forward, in this case.

Just kidding, Deke. Geez, if I could fly at night, I'd have seen the
 1000 a long time ago.

I'll probably slow a bit now....but I'm thinking of getting some
float training, so the 'fox may sit during that time. I'd sure love
to see my plane on floats.... : )

I'm the 4th owner, but the one who completed the remaining 80-85 % of
the work, and (because I wasn't a pilot at the time) watched it fly
for the first time. I got my (continued) flight training in it
starting at the 40th hour of its' life. : )

Lynn, building and flying your kitfox for 1000 hours is an accomplishment some of us only dream of.

By the way, did you buy your kit from Jimmy in Texas? I think you did and if so an extra rudder gap foam from my kit is on yours.

				Hi Tom-
Yes I did buy the unfinished kit from Jimmy, but I didn't use the
rudder gap foam....I made up my own rudder gap fairing, after making
airfoils for the vertical. I had some prints that Jimmy gave me for
the shape of the vertical airfoils, but they seemed quite fat, so I
 scaled them down a bit. I used a "W" (cross section)-shaped aluminum
"socket" for the vertical, then rounded the leading edge of the
rudder to fit inside the "W", creating a pretty decent fairing,
similar to the fiberglas item available from Kitfox.

I haven't heard from Jimmy, and I know he follows the Jabiru Yahoo
group, where I also announced this accomplishment...guess I'd better
call and see how he is.
This foam...was it the hard yellow foam, or the pretty soft white
vinyl-covered foam? I used some of the hard foam to do some forming
somewhere, but I can't figure out for the life of me what that vinyl
stuff is used for....after 1000 hours, I guess I don't need to know
what it should have been used for. : )

Lynn, It was the hard yellow. My Classic 4 kit came with one for a model 4 and one for a Serries 5 kitfox. jimmy was going to modify it to use on his/your 4. I don't know what the white foam is. I don't think my kit had any of that in it.

Congratulations Lynn, for reaching 1000 hrs.
My speedster has 1311 hrs on it. It had 476 hrs on it when I bought it in
 Jan 2000.

The white foam was soft and had this vinyl covering over it....it
looked like a door-to-jamb seal....it might have been for a house for
all Jimmy and I know. I did call him today and mentioned it, and he
 didn't recall it.

I recall using some of the hard yellow foam for building up the top
of my rudder and the vertical stab, so they'd better match the
slightly fatter area where the trailing edge of the vert. and the
leading edge of the rudder came together.
