I just got back from flying out to my mom's place for the weekend San
Diego to Tucson, out Saturday, back Sunday. Decided to go on Saturday
 morning.

 Out 2:45, 23.6 gal
 Back 3:00, 27.8 gal

 Round Trip:
By Tiger: about 6 hrs, $210 gas, no TSA silliness

 For comparison:
By Miata: about 12 hrs, $120 gas, Mojave desert
By Southwest: about 5 hours, $212 ticket, "please take off your shoes"

Twelve hours in the Miata across the desert? I'd shoot myself.
So, until Southwest starts letting me sit left seat (ok, Id settle for
right seat, and I do have a commercial multi, hint-hint) I think Ill be
 sticking with the Tiger.

 Michael

 Ps.
I do agree with others who have written that as fuel costs increase, we will
 become more "aware" pilots.
NMPG vs GPH? Enjoyment vs Distance? Flexibility vs Cost? You decide.
On this last trip, I had a 10 knot tailwind one direction, and a 30 knot
headwind the other. We have a lot more control over our flying than we
 think...

Sometimes there isn't even a comparison that comes close to reasonable.

My wife and I took a short hop last Saturday from Norwood, Ma. To
Provincetown, Ma, over Cape Cod Bay. About 30 miles straight across, took
maybe 15 minutes each way. The only other way is to drive, at least 2 1/2
 hours each way, no traffic.

Despite this, I am always asked how I can justify the costs of a personal
plane, even my 32-year-old Traveler. Frequently, the question comes from a
friend or family member who has a vacation home in Florida, to whom I
respond: divide the costs of your vacation home by the number of days you
stay there, and you'll probably find you could vacation just as often and
stay at the Four Seasons Hotel instead and STILL save a bundle.

There's just something about the fun and freedom of your own plane that is
it's on reward - even at 5 bucks a gallon.

				Hey Gary-

Not too many years ago, you could land right INTO Taunton. That airport is
 gone.
There are about three airports that are about equi-distant from the city of
Taunton. I'd guess that New Bedford is your best bet...it's the largest,
with the most choice in facilities, rental cars, etc. It's towered and has
the tightest security of the other two [Plymouth and Mansfield, both smaller
and uncontrolled], so your Grumman will be safe. For the last several
months, Sandpiper Air has sold avgas at considerably less than everybody
else. Call them for a tie-down if you want, they're nice people
(Mark)....maybe they'd stick you in a corner of their large hangar.

Drop me a line when you're in town!

Excuse me.....that's a rather large and stupid error on my part. It was Fall
 River that disappeared, right?
