Hello Gang:
I want to say up front that I respect my friend Richard and know he is a great innovator. He has many great ideas. He has gained much experience as he has rebuilt Kolbs. I am very appreciative that he was actually able to come to my house and inspect my wing assembly work.
I also have great respect for John H. one of our mentors. When I was considering "rivets or stitching" I talked to both Richard and John H. but also Travis at Kolb.
Travis suggested I do an experiment. At his suggestion I took a small piece (1') of the rib size tubing and drilled a 1/8th inch hole (the size of the rivet used by Kolb). I then bent the tubing to see how much effort was necessary to break the tubing. It of course broke where the hole was. As per Travis' recommendation I then drilled another piece and installed a rivet of the type used to secure the fabric. With the rivet expanded/pulled in the hole, the tubing broke again but only after much greater force. Installing the rivets on the ribs actually compensates for the holes drilled in the tubing.
Lord willing and of course, if I don't do anything careless (as I have been know to do), I hope I will not have to "rebuild" my wings or ribs. Any serious damage would probably necessitate replacing ribs anyway as well as fabric --- stitching, rivets or otherwise.
I decided to go with what Kolb recommended, and John. I am satisfied that following Kolb's
recommendation-- using rivets-- I have a strong wing. I did space the rivets in the three root ribs at about 2 1/2" so as to keep the fabric from "drumming".
All the rib-stitchers can say "I told you so" if I am wrong.
Thanks Matte for the list..
Bob

Hi Bob G:
Congratulations on completing your wings. That is a big milestone done.
Don't want folks to think I recommend anything. Normally, I don't.
Usually, I tell you what I do and you can make your own decision on which
way to go.
Still can not walk without my walker, but getting better every day. My goal
is to be back on my feet by 1 Sep. My physical therapist says I can do it.
My medical and BRF have expired, as have Miss P'fer's Annual Inspection, but
we have all that lined up as soon as I am able to get'er done.
If I am good to go 1 Sep, I will most likely make my annual road trip West.
If not, we'll do it next year, and plan on making MV 2011, and for sure the
Rock House, Larry and Karen Cottrell's next May.
Times a wasting...
