Hello, i would like to fly my kolb in a mode c vail without having to call each time. I see some cheap transponders pop up on barnstormers and similar...can i install these myself? Do they need an inspection from a avionics shop? What all is needed to do this?

Any kolbers out there have tx's installed, pics?

Thanks!

The answers are
1. Yes
2. Supposedly at each annual inspection - although if your mode C is accurate, you won't attract any attention...
3.About $400 if you get lucky, more if you don't.
Here's my tx & txp. http://www.bcchapel.org/pages/0003/pg4.htm

Yes you can put it in....and yes it has to have a VFR certification and they are good for 24 months...I just had me M3X done in feb for $50.00...he checked it and had to adjust the altitude on the mode c part. Call around for prices....

Yes and it must also have altitude encoder too to fly within a Mode C area or to fly over a Class C area without contact with ATC. It must be re-certified, in the airplane, by a qualified avionics shop every 2 years to be used at all.

If your aircraft does not have an electrical system, and was never issued an airworthiness certificate when it had one, you can fly within a mode c area without a transponder but must stay out of the Class B airspace itself. Nor can you legally fly within or over Class C airspace without permission from ATC without a currently certified transponder with altitude encoder.
