|
|
Dear Listers but particularly UK builders (and flyers),
I've read a lot on the list about using the Gary Hall teflon and stainless steel hinge kit and I have bought it ready for the build. There are comments in the archive from some people who have actually used the kit but I can't tell if any of them are UK builders. I asked Andy Draper if there was an existing prototype mod and got this response:
"I have found no record of a mod that uses Teflon around the control surface hinges so you will need to submit a mod application for it. I did do an investigation some while ago and established that the stresses on the smaller diameter wire were acceptable, but I don't recall the wire size nor the reserve factors, I'm afraid, so you'll need to go back to first principles to provide this info."
Do any UK listers have a mod number or other data to support a mod? Alternatively, perhaps off list, let me know if any inspectors have allowed these changes without classifying it as a Mod?
Thanks
Richard C-C

Richard,
Check out this link for an alternative to the teflon and stainless steel repair. www.n91cz.com See part way down the page under Hinge Play.
Basically he found that the teflon repair failed in a short time too. So he reams the hinges to remove the burrs and replaces the pin with close tolerance welding rod. We've made the reamer and have the wire but haven't actually made the repair yet.

I have seen this third hinge argument on the list before and I was thinking
of installing extra hinges on mine. Does anyone know if this would be an
acceptable mod with the LAA in the UK?

As you know I keep an eye on what mods people are doing and I have not heard of anyone putting this mod to the LAA. What Andy has said seems to confirm this. It has come up in conversations but the opinions I have heard suggest that it is not a good idea.

Ian
I'm guessing you were talking about the hinge pin mod?
Do you know if anyone has submitted the third aileron hinge mod to the LAA or would this be a non-mod and just subject to inspector sign-off.

Ian - thanks, guess I'll scrap that idea and get on with the build then!
